9100 size, Dothan performance relative to P4, ...

I received my 9100 (3.2GHz, 60GB 7200RPM, SXGA+ Samsung) about a week ago, and I LOVE the screen and performance; however, it is larger than I had anticipated. I should have more closely noted the specs, so I'm only blaming myself. I am a software developer, so I bought the laptop for two thing: development, and gaming at idle times. This laptop is perfectly suitable for both of those tasks, but I find it almost uncomfortable to type on due to its substantial height.

Anyway, enough whining. Does the height bother anyone else, and if so, do you acclimate over time? I know the Dothan is being released to OEMs, so how will the top Dothan CPU compare to my 3.2GHz w/ HT? If the performance will be close to equal in that regard, then I might seriously consider holding onto my Thinkpad and just waiting for the Dothan.

Great forums all!

Dothan dothan dothan dothan dothan!!!!

Seriously, P4s should get phased out ASAP on laptops. I'm a firm believer than whatever your doing that really needs a P4 w/ HT, do it on a desktop. Otherwise, a 2 gigahertz Dothan w/ 2 meg L2 Cache will spank it for general everyday use and gaming!

Then again just my opinion. Some people get desktop replacements that they want to lug around occasionally, which is fine for some people i guess. though what they really do on those things and if they really NEED that much processing power is questionable.

Well, I'm a consultant, and so that precludes lugging around a desktop. I do have a desktop, but having to constantly copy things back and forth between laptop and desktop can be a pain. I tried to consolidate as much as possible into the 9100.

That said, this thing is really quite massive. I was more concerned about performance of the Dothan relative to the P4. If the Dothan will match my 3.2, then I really see no need to haul this monlithic thing around. If the 3.2 is substantially faster than a Dothan laptop with weight and overall size, then I could rationalize it.

Does any of this matter? You don't even know if your laptop exist or not. Surely you perceive it and formulate an idea of it in your mind. But existence is not an attribute of things and you have no way of knowing whether the idea of the notebook in your mind correspond to something that actually exists or not. So why get so worried over something that may not even exist?

(Sorry...just had to do that. However it would suck for me if your screenname is actually your name!)

LOL

Well, I realize I'm trying to quantify a difference between that which is tangible (my 3.2) and that which isn't (the Dothan), but I'm trying to satiate my needs for now and the future.

im also a software developer, and i've got this really awesome I8600 [see specs in signature]. it has handled everything i've installed, and unless your are developing multithreading software you will not see mayor diference between the DOthan and your P4, well maybe you will safe like 30secs-1min at the most during compiling anything but it will have to be really big, that said, if you go with a Dothan machine you will get a thiner, ligther, cooler[temps], a LOT more battery, and you could say is more stylish!!

the same thing in games, the diference will be something you can live with...... plus if you are a bleedingeye-hardcore-gamer you would doit on a desktop!!!

so i would go with the Dothan machine,

Dothan notebooks?

What's a comparable widescreen Dothan notebook to an 8600 or 9100?
well Dothan hasn't been released yet, so there is none just yet.

I talked to a Dell Tech today and he said that the new things in the "new" 8600 were more capacity on HDD Memory and Procesor, so i asked him about the procesor details and he said that now they come in 2 new "flavors" these being, 1.8 and 2.0 Gigs. so i would say that the 8600 will start shipping Dothan as soon as they are released..... we will have to wait and see

oh yes, i asked him if then i could buy one of those cpu and have them remplace it. he said that as long as i paid for the cpu and the replacement, they will do it. asked him about prices but he said that i should talk to a sales rep then....... again we will have to wait and see [and hope]

Dothan?

Is Dothan a new CPU or notebook series?

And when is it scheduled to be released? And why exactly is it being so hyped now?
Dothan is the codename for the next gen of Pentium-Ms, so its a CPU. The current generation of Pentium-Ms are "Banias" (LOL!)

Newayz, yea, its gonna pwn. Double L2 Cache size and a significant increase in clock hertz.

Next we'll see Sonoma in the fall, which is combination of Dothan (up to 2.13 gigahertz) and socket change, and 533 Front Side Bus. <-- this is what Ill be getting
post #11 of 13
well Dothan is the next generation of Pentium M CPU's, and is the main part of the Centrino bundle, also Dothan is just the code name for it, it will be a 90 nanometer core CPU, featuring 2 Megs of L2 Cache, it's said to be released on may yet ithas been delayed twice now, so until i see it in some OEM site i wont believe is actually out. it such a hype because that is what we do!!! hype about every new mayor thing that is commig out e.g. Nv 5700go card, Ati 9700, Dothan and so on........
So the next in the Centrino mobile series? How is it projected to compare against a P4 w/HT, though?

But awww, h*ll - I can't wait till the Fall!

Are we talkin' early or late?

i will put it this way:
P4 wHT is a desktop CPU, so is meant to be pure HorsePower.....
Pentium M is a Notebook CPU, so is meant to give you good performance while running cooler, and using far less electricity [MORE battery life].
some say you take a Pentium M clock Speed and multiply it by 1.4, and you get the P4 comparable speed... plus Dothan does not have HT obiously!!

i would say late fall [knowing Intel!]
