which os are you guys running on your 1730?

im running 32 bit vista, but im just wondering how xp performs on this. any faster performance in games? and how is sli support?
i'm using vista, not by choice though. i would prefer xp just becuase i think its more stable. but i'm getting used to vista and have become very dependent on the sidebar. i'm starting to find ways around making things work in vista so it doesnt bother me as much.

Very happy with the performance under XPP,games are consistently around 40% faster with SLI enabled and only have a couple of games [the witcher,GOW]that have microstuttering or pauses with SLI enabled [still high fps though] but still annoying enough to want to disable SLI.

Haven't tried vista on the 1730 to compare, but can't see me liking it anymore on the 1730 than I didn't on my Vostro1500 or M65.

I installed Vista64 two days after receiving my m1730.
I wanted to take advantage of my 4GB RAM. Kinda silly that Dell offers the m1730 with 4GB of RAM but does not let you choose 64 bit OS! Go figure.
I had a few problems at first, but that might have jus been me. Now, I have two things not working... first, the touchpad scroll areas don't work and I can't re-install my Audigy Advanced MB sofware that I paid 20$ for

nemy, let me know if you get the audigy working! i too had it as an added option on mine. i've got the disc for it, but it wants a key, which i dont have becuase the program was pre-intalled on the system. when i reinstalled the os, i lost that feature. i called dell, but they have no clue, they said that it was 3rd party software and they couldnt help. (sorry about the hijack)

The key should be on the envelope the CD came in. It was on mine, but then again it was a REL A00 CD from June 2006.

Did you try calling Creative support? When I reinstalled the OS last week, my key had expired. I called them and the tech asked me for my Service Tag. He said he needed to confirm it was on the system when I bought it and looked it up on support.dell.com (Original Config).

Give it a shot.

Tell Dell to send you the Disc. This is the item number from my order 313-5014.

ok i'll give it a shot!

yup, cd-key is on the envellope.
It will start to install itself and then say that you have to install the drivers before installing the software. the thing is, the drivers are already installed... so it blows.
It's really looking for the 32bit drivers I guess.

i retract my statement, i just reinstalled xp and i'm good to go now

But going back to xp dont you lose the dx10 features? Im getting a new system and it has vista on it but i thought to use the dx10 features i'd have to keep vista.
You can "hack" XP to work with DX10, but it's extremely buggy, and is experimental, at best.
yeah you lose dx10, but honestly i'm not sure its going to affect my gaming so much right now. worse case when it gets to where i cant play anything at all, i could always just reinstall vista. who knows, maybe by then i'll have no probs.

Wow, you guys are STILL having problems with vista???

I have been running Vista 64 for at least 3 months on the current install and have had no problems at all (once I disabled driver signing and a few other things...). In fact my vista 64 install is much faster than my XP install. I dual boot and test quite a bit now...

I will admit too that under "straight" installs, XP does outperform Vista. Until you turn some of Vista's "new features" off. Which are stupid IMO and not needed anyway. Vista (especially 64), with the right know how, can easily be tuned to outperform XP.

And I just recently dual booted with XP and I would say I DONT miss XP anymore. I can install Vista 64, drivers, and updates now faster than XP too.

Now if M$ would fix the problems for you all that I managed to fix for me, XP would be a thing of the past. Who can argue with 8 cores, 12GB Ram, and 7TB of HD's... All under 64Bit Flawlessly...

I sincerely wish they would tune their OS' before letting them out to the crowds, even something as simple as 4-5 different selectable "modes" that change up the OS settings ranging from "everything on" to "bare minimum--maximum performance"
