Replacement of discontinued laptop under warranty

Hey everyone,

I purchased a M170 about 2 1/2 years ago and luckily selected a 4 year warranty. This past weekend, it suffered about a 6 foot drop with pretty much destroyed everything short of a few accessories I had plugged in at the time. I know that drops and stuff are covered under CompleteCare (does Dell even offer that anymore?), but I've noticed that there are no longer any M170's offered in the Outlet. My question is this: are there still M170's out there that are unlisted but used for replacements, or will Dell ship me some other kind of laptop? Thought it would be helpful to see if anyone else has had a similar experience before going to Dell support.

Thanks!

My research in the forums indicates that you will probably get an M1730. I will actually find out for myself soon as my M170 also suffered an accident this week.

Do you think it would be possible to request a lower model, like the M1530, rathaer than the 1730? Just looking at the size of the M1730, it looks quite a bit bigger than the M170 of old... and I don't think my laptop bag would be able to accommodate both the laptop and the massive power brick. Does the costumer have any say in this situation, or does Dell strictly replace specific systems with certain other systems?

It's always possible to request. Hah, if I were them I wouldn't have any problem giving you a cheaper system than you're entitled to.

I don't imagine the M1730 is that much bigger, the screen size is still the same. I would get some official sizes to compare before trying for a lesser system.

I would suggest, if they offer you a M1730, take it, and i you really want smaller, then Sell the M1730 - its worth around 3K depending on the config you get.

not trying to steal ur thread. I have a similar question. bought the E1705 w/7900gs 2 years ago n still have 1 year warranty left. if something were to happen to it, what would Dell replace it with? i have CompleteCare. would they exchange it for a NEW or OUTLET replacement?

thanks.

My e1505 was replaced with an m1530 about a month ago. It was an outlet machine but is in perfect shape, i think it was on ordered but never opened/shipped unit.

There are still some(30) XPS 1710's in the outlet.

With a Complete care issue. Dell will not let you choose what you are getting. What they will so is tell you they are sending a new system. After that the tech will fill out a fusion that will tell the dispatchers to replace your computer. They will try there best to match your system if they can not get that system then you will get what is currently on the website. They base what system your gettting on the price you spent at the time when your bought the computer. So if you paid what a 1530 would cost now then you might get that else you will get the next closes one 1730 or a 1330. depending on your price and there computer prices on the website. You can request but do not get mad when you get a computer that is not what you asked for.

I'm almost 100% sure they have a lot of M170's ready for this purpose. You'll more than likely get another M170. It may be refurbished, which is not all bad because it'll still have new parts in it.

My neighbours 1710 is getting replaced, will they want his old one back before they send the new one? Dp they disassemble the old one or do they just turf them in the trash?

No, Dell will send out the replacement to his house. They will include a waybill to return the other laptop back to dell. Once dell gets it they will test the laptop and find out the reason why it was malfunctioning. They will do what they need to figure out how to fix the issue and help out tech support. If your neighbor does not send the old computer back he will receive a bill for the replacement computer. Make sure you let him know he needs to return it in 10 days.

Hmmm, I guess 30 years experience in the PC industry is not good enough?

I run an IT shop with pure Dell. That's they way it's been done every time for my returns. I've seen a few get a newer model, but extremely rare.

It's kind of like my M1710 laptop right now. Bad video. The 7950GTX chips were out of production runs earlier this year, they don't make them any more. But I'm still getting a 7950GTX replacement and not a 8X00 series replacement. How? Because they keep stock of these to the expected warranty amount.

you are talking about a part, not a laptop replacement. i have gotten 6 9750 myself, 4 of them after they stopped production on the m1710, so ya, 30 years doesnt mean a thing in the interweb, everyone is an expert

I'm sure you're an expert. From the experience on one computer, I guess that makes you one? I only gave my experience from many years of Dell and other makers, not expertise. Don't ever expect the same results from a support group from any computer maker. You won't get it. Only expect the same computer you send in. If you get a newer one, great. If not, you have not lost out. It still costs a heck of a lot of money or time to make diamonds out of coal, no matter how you go about it.

Woodstock, folks like you ruin an otherwize good forum. Narg posted something constructive, and you come in and only post crap and self-centered b.s.

I agree with Narg, the possiblity of getting a tottally different model is slim. Possible, but slim. Don't get your hopes up. But do be satisfied you'll get a working model if you are covered.
to the point. if you get a system replacement for your m170, you will absolutely not get another m170. 100% positive about this. you most likely will not get an m1710, 99.9% sure of this. you will get a m1730. that what everyone on this forum and nbr get (the laptop forums i frequent) when getting a replacement for the 170-1710 for the past year or so. if you need a part, they will fix your old computer for you.
