Please oh please HELP! T61 Memory Problem

Thread Starter
Hello helpful and lovely people,

I have a T61, purchased in December. I've added a few simple home video editing-related programs, nothing fancy. Everything on the compute, programs and documents including music, adds up to around 40GB of the 108 GB hard drive, However, my T61 tells me I only have 15% memory open. It also wants to be defragmented every few days. I have run every diagnostic with which it is equipped; disc cleaner, defragmenter, doctor, and I have taken it to a computer specialist, a nice German gentleman who also called his son in Germany (I am currently working on a project in Mozambique), and he searched around on it for about an hour, confirming that really only about 40GB of memory are actually in use. Can anyone help me?

I don't know if this makes a difference, but startup seems incredibly slow as well. I'm a former Fujitsu owner, so I really don't know much about lenovos, or about all the fancy security stuff it comes with.

I really need help. The German gentelman ended up just saying, "Lady, you've really got a problem!" And so here I am, disheartened and confused....

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

. so you use 40gb out of 100gb, that is normal
. 15% of memory open? can you give us a pic of what you are talking about? if the system si not busy, then why should it use more than it needs?
. slow: have you tried to remove un-needed startup processes and services? what antivirus software are you using?

cheers ...

Memory or harddrive space?

How much RAM does your laptop have?

What operating system are you using?

1gb & Vista, 15% free may be quite accurate. Vista puts more stuff in RAM, and will use up as much as it has available. It's not like XP where 512mb RAM or 3gb of RAM it only used about 350mb of RAM. Vista will fill your RAM up with applications that you run frequently. This is normal, and should make things faster as all the data is already in RAM rather than waiting to be paged to it.

I think, from what you are describing, that you are at 60% free on your Hard Drive. That is normal.
Your 15% :memory open: comment --- I assume you are discussing your RAM. How large is your memory ? 512M , 1 Gig, 2, Gig, 3, Gig, ??? And depending on the types of application that you are running, it would not be surprising if you do not have enough RAM. Video editing and music and easily suck up RAM.
As far as the constant need for defragging .... do you do a lot of video editing ?? large disk usages ??
Are you using Vista ? 32 or 64 ?
That in itself is a RAM sink-hole ...

good luck,

oh please. this is a soooo outdated belief.
. non-use ram = dead ram
. vista is widely recognised as managing system ram - and resources - much better than its predecessors
. as long as the user does not suffer peformance hit, how any good OSes use (manage) the "free" ram is their own business

cheers ...
