HP Pavilion DV1000 interesting power? problem

I work for a public library and we have a very small budget and I try to do repairs myself, but this one has me stumped.
HP Pavilion DV1000
Will not start up by the power button, or at any time with the AC plugged in.
Will only start with the lid shut and by removing the battery and putting it back in.
All the lights come on, fan starts, Hard drive works, but as soon as I open the lid, it shuts down.
I have started it with the lid open, holding down the switch and removing battery (requires coordination!). Everything looks fine and if I could hold down the lid switch all day, I could work on it. As soon as I let go of the switch, it shuts off.
Have thought about taping it down, lol. Except for the fact that soon my battery will be dead and it will not start at all in AC.

I am open to just about any suggestions. Having done a google search, I couldn't find anything that was just like my problem, so I'm hoping that someone with more knowledge than me can figure this out.
Thank-you!

As an update to the above referenced problem that I had (In case anyone else has this same type of problem!):
When hooking a monitory and keyboard and mouse up to the computer it works perfectly, but I finally broke down and took it to someone who knows and did not charge to look at it. He is positive that it is part of the motherboard and does not even want to attempt to fix it. He has seen a lot of the HP Pavilions with these types of problems. I think we will stay away from HP's for now!!

If you can run it on battery, and holding down the lid switch, you might want to try flashing the most recent BIOS for that model. HP does make mention of this, although I don't see why that issue should occur based on that...

Also, you may try removing the switch cover, and making sure that there is no debris causing a problem, and that any cables are not compromised ("pinched" etc.)

I would NOT assume that there is a need to replace the motherboard...it is possible, but not a given. If so, at it's age, a motherboard replacement although not difficult to do, would not be very cost-effective.

A DV 1000 sure is not a "new" notebook by any stretch of the imagination, and it was not built as a particularly "rugged" notebook either! Wear and tear happens, and at a library, I assume that this machine has probably had any number of users...inevitably some gentle...some not so. This is a budget-level laptop. For library usage? Rather than saying "I think we will stay away from HPs for now", you might say "I think that we will stay away from budget notebooks for now"...

I have a dv6625us, a newer version of the dv series. It works just fine, and it suits me well, but I would NOT recommend it for an environment with multiple users, such as a library/school etc. It is a good budget laptop...but in the end, a BUDGET laptop...you get what you pay for.

Whether you by a Dell, HP, Sony, Acer, Gateway etc., at the budget level, you will get a decent notebook, that functions well, but is not built very ruggedly...THAT is how they can sell them at budget prices. Carbon fiber, magnesium alloy cases, shock mounted drives, spill-proof keyboards, heavy duty hinges, and such, all add a premium, regardless of manufacturer.

It appears to be a cracked motherboard problem in the posts above..I have to ask..do all of you with this problem, close the lid all the time to turn off the laptop...or, do you power down thru Start>Shut Down...Constant closing of the laptop lid and opening can cause multiple problems with budget notebooks , mostly cracked hinges and I suppose, due to the flexing of the laptop, internal problems as well...I totally tell people all the time to take a few seconds of their valuable lifetime and it down properly and not to rely on closing the lid...JM2CW

I never (well, almost) close my laptop lid - the power button is pretty worn... (mostly just hibernate from it). No cracks!
