Odd Inspiron 1501 LCD Problem

Hey all,

I need a bit of advice for something which i thought would be an easy fix.

The problem is on a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop. The LCD backlight stopped working. I proved this by connecting the laptop to a CRT and using the FN + F8 key to get a display on a monitor.

Fine i thought, so i was able to get another LCD from Dell after twisting their arm as the Warranty had recently run out. Dell true to their word delivered the LCD today. I fitted it (along with a new cable) carefully making sure all connections were seated correctly.

Unfortunately the same issue is still there, the screen comes on but there is no backlight and it is nearly impossible to see without attaching an external monitor. If i go into diagnostics it does indeed fail on connecting to the Inverter! I have just replaced the LCD (which comes with the inverter does it not??) so i am not sure what else to try.

Thoughts?

The inverter is the link between the screen and the laptop itself, insuring that the right amount of power is being fed to the display. The display itself does not come with an inverter unless stated. The symptoms you describe, would have led me to change the inverter first (cheapest part), and then replace the screen if the inverter is not the cause of the light failure.

Agreed, the screen itself looks to come complete with the Inverter attached and i have received a replacement from Dell.

You can see a picture of the screen here http://www.parts-people.com/images/products/FD162.JPG

From that picture the Inverter looks to be the item fixed below the screen. It has a cable going into it (2 pin with pink and black cables)

As the screen has been replaced, and is showing the same fault as the last LCD, would you assume the motherboard is now the item at fault?

The inverter is definitely connected to that display in the pic. Before I can assume it’s the motherboard (rare in that case), you might have to try and find another inverter and see if it fails or work. The possibility that you received a non functioning inverter with your display is small but possible. The fact that you can see everything on your display when powered up (no light), is a sign that the backlight itself is gone, or more likely the inverter is bad. Unless you’re just wanting another motherboard (if free, sure!), I would look into getting another inverter.

I haven’t looked into issues concerning your notebook model, but you might want to Google your problem to see if anyone else had a motherboard issue causing the backlight not to function.

I think i am having the same problem with my dell...if i turn the brightness up too much, i hear a high pitched noise coming from the case and most of the time the monitor will shut off completely...but if i hook it up to my tv at my house it works fine...so should i just get another inverter from ebay and see if that solves my problem?

Thanks
