TM8104: Installing XP after upgrading the HDD

Planning to upgrade my 100 GB (PATA) drive to a larger drive on my Acer TravelMate 8104.

Wondering if one can use the recovery disks to install the XP on the new drive - and if that is possible - what kind of partitions will it make?

Or do I need a copy of a real XP install disk?

Has anyone updated to Western Digital Scorpio 2,5" 250GB 8MB ATA/100 5400RPM?

try the cd's on the blank drive. if it gives you an error you will need to create a primary partition formatted in fat32

As far as I remember, while restoring from CD(s), you have a choice to create default partitions (first is exactly the size of first partition the laptop came with, second is the rest of drive) or leave drive as you have partitioned it before running restore.

Thanks Darth. Nice to see you are still around. Haven't been on the forum in a long time. I see you have an ASUS now.

Trying to give some new boost to my old Acer with a bigger disk and more memory.

I'm pretty satisfied with the TM8104. I was even plesantly surprised this week that I was able to instal an AVID xpress pro which actually run - which can be a bit tricky with non-specsed machines.

Only problem I really have had with my Acer is some PII driver or something after installing the XP SP3.

Anyways I'll try to partion the new disk to FAT and then install with the recovery disk. And change to NTFS after installing. Lets hope it all goes well. I think I'll wait til my holidays to do so in case I knock out my computer totally.
