What Is Dell Thinking????? A Step Backwards For Inspiron

Thread Starter
Okay, I had an inspiron 9300 a few years back, the build quality was exceptional, it was a great laptop, great speakers, nice keyboard, subwoofer, magnesium alloy construction.
DUAL COOLING SLOTS, a 6800 go video card which in those days was top of the line aside from the gtx.

The design was silver and white which was reminiscent of some apple laptops prior to this model of inspiron. Many didnt like the design and the white trim as they say. I was neither opposed to it or extremely fond of it but I thought it looked nice.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: the laptop had separate cooling for the laptop itself and separate cooling for the video card which kept the laptop very cool and allowed the inspiron to have a powerful graphics card.

Construction was superior...no flexing of the body and no flexing of the lcd panel, you could NOT press against the back of the lcd panel and make dimples on the front of the lcd screen. It was a very durable laptop. It was about 9 pounds and some would call it large and heavy but as I am not one to fall for those terms at that time I compared the size and weight to other 17 inch laptops and it could hardly be called big or heavy. I have to wonder what kind of weaklings cannot carry a 9 pound laptop??
The inspiron 9300's construction was second only to the legendary IBM thinkpads of that time before lenovo ruined the legendary IBM reputation with poor quality releases.

DELL has taken a page from Lenovo's book, Toshiba's, Sonly's and Acer's by making the Inspiron a cheap and flimsy design with lots of color choices so it really looks neat oh boy!!! I can choose my own color, how frickin stylish!! I can get a lime green cover or red or lemon blah blah blah.

Dont get me wrong, the redesigned INSPIRON 1720 looks nice and does include a numeric keypad........ WHAT THE REDESIGNED INSPIRON DOESNT INCLUDE IS GOOD QUALITY AND DURABILITY....

GONE IS THE MAGNESIUM ALLOY FRAME..... the laptop FLEXES ALL OVER THE BODY AND YOU GET HUGE DIMPLES WHEN PRESSING AGAINST THE BACK OF THE LCD LID.

GONE IS THE SEPARATE COOLING FAN/VENT for a graphics card The lack of which results in less favorable video card options and higher temps in the laptop chassis which is now quite noticeably warmer. At a time when the VISTA operating system requires more power from your graphics card.........DELL only offers weaker versions than offered on the previous INSPIRON design.

THE END RESULT?? A frilly colored laptop that previous dell Inspiron 9300/9400/E1705 owners will frown upon.......it costs the same yet comes in a flimsy chassis that is warmer with graphics that can only be called POOR compared to the older designs 7900 go card. There is Only ONE COOLING VENT/FAN on the new 1720

I had hoped that the new inspiron would be an improvement with its new design only to be disappointed when seeing it out in stores..... Well thank god I can pick a nice color right?

The last inspiron also offered custom colors in snap on covers which I might ad were very nice looking and added even more protection to the LCD LID. No snap on covers this time.

WHATS MY POINT??? DONT BUY THE NEW INSPIRONS..... their poor construction, cheap plastics and colorful color draw are no better than the laptops other companies make. In fact the toshibas and some new hp's can be had for less money with more powerful graphics options, slightly better construction than the Inspiron 1720 and aruably a nicer design and finish with more performance too.

Now some would say yeah!! but you can get a custom color on your laptop lid ( there are something like 10 or more? to choose from). Well if those kind of gimmicks and cheap flimsy laptop designs dont bother you then you'll love the new inspiron though again, Toshiba's new designs are far better than dells Inspiron redesign ( typical cheaper, more flimsy construction but glossy elegant finish, better graphics cards and better LCD screen and better price which begs the question why go with the new dell inspiron redesing over something like the toshiba satellite 305 series or 205 series?

Some would also say that dell did this so people like me would pay more than twice the price of the old inspiron (1500) dollars for an XPS 17 inch laptop??? UMMMM NOPE NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

INSTEAD I will be buying from HP or TOSHIBA or SONY.

THANKS FOR THE STEP BACKWARDS DELL I WILL SHOP ELSEWHERE FOR MY 9300 REPLACEMENT!!!

FYI: Sony's build quality is horrible (from personal experience) and Toshiba doesn't have the greatest reputation either.

Last I heard Lenovo and HP both had a good reputation for build quality, so of the brands you mentioned in the above rant, they're the 2 I'd choose from if I were you.

As far as your claim that the newer inspirons lack a metal frame/base I'm going to let Dr Perry Cox take it away....

[YT]WrjwaqZfjIY[/YT]

As someone who TAKES THESE THINGS APART FOR A LIVING the newer Inspiron laptops all have a case metal base, and they all have a cast metal lid. The paint is forumlated and applied so thick that it hides the fact that the parts are metal. THe XPS M1530 and 1330 even have aluminium in the palmrests. The Studio series which will be out in a week or two will also have metal being the predominant material in the outter skin.

As far as Dell nixing their video card offerings there's two reasons for that, number 1 being that very few Inspiron buyers were purchasing the advanced video cards in the first place (Seriously, like 9 out of 10 E1705's I work on have Intel integrated graphics, and the 10th guy takes two visits because the moron at tech support ordered the wrong board) The 2nd reason for nixing higher end video card options was because Inspiron sales were cutting out XPS sales. Sorry, that's just business, XPS systems carry a greater profit margin. You don't have to like it, but Dell isn't a charity.

A side effect of sticking to lower end graphics cards (and again increasing profit margins in a highly competitive industry) allows the designers to stick with one cooling fan. Again, you don't have to like it, but from a business standpoint gently nudging customers that demand DVI and high end graphics to more profitable XPS systems is a side-effect of the free market. Granted that Dell should do everything they can to 9300 and E1705 owners that are still under warranty.

See, the free market at work. Now stop trolling.

Hey Cutters,
I remember that you helped me out a few years back when I was gonna get the i9300. I had it for a little over 2 years then gave it to my parents. I loved it but it needed lots of repairs in my last 6 months of owinig it. It's still going strong and it's fast. I replaced it with a Vostro 1700 and I feel that I got the ideal replacement. It reminds me lots of the i9300 and the keyboards even feel similar. The new Inspirons/ Vostros are great buys, although the only reason I went for the Vostro was because of the color.

i too owned a 9300 with a 6800, was dissapointed to see the video cards didnt improve much.

But it makes good business sense, why should I pay more for a XPS when I can configure a inspiron the same way?

I loved my 9300, love my 9400, and love my M1330. All have had exceptional build quality.

isn't this contradictory? not trying to nitpick, but when i bought my 9300 back in the day, i was part of a huge movement of people on the forums who were purchasing them for the very reason that they performed well and they were cheaper than the xps systems. i think your second reason is completely true, but the first isn't valid. they probably did lose money to spec'ed out inspirons, but i doubt nearly all of their 9300 sales had integrated graphics.

The Insp's are made and designed for buys with a limited budget. And the Vostro's are the same thing as a Insp but black and have windows XP options they are made and desiged for small businesses. Same as there desktop lines. If you want a great computer for desgned and preformance you need to look at the XPS line of computers. They are built for power and desinged to take damage if you like to throw at your wife when she is talking back at you. If you have a budget then check out the dell outlet you can get new computers they are currently shipping and listing at the dell site.

wiat, what?

I myself had a 9300, and she was a sweet machine, but to upgrade to a XPS was only about 400 or 500 more and the only real difference was the Ultra video card over the standard...So of course I wouldn't pay that when a mere overclock solved the problem.

I can see what dell is doing and I fully understand, if you want top end graphics and the very latest, they don't want you building a lower end unit to match it. Just buisness as others have said..So get a extra visa buy the higher end lappy, and you will be just as happy as you were with the 9300

I am really curious if anyone still has the old Inspiron 9100. Mine is still kicking, use it every day. As for gaming well I struggle in that department. Nothing beat carrying around a 50 pound lappy eh

Cheers

Try to keep in mind that this forum is one of the most gamer oriented/performance oriented ones out there. Therefore, when you come here it will probably seem like 9/10 buyers are buying some sort of GPU in their laptop, while 1/10 is buying integrated. When thinking globally however, a very small community in reality is gamers, let alone gamers who play on laptops, let alone gamers who buy the inspiron series of Dell laptops.
