My Dad and I both have Vostro 1400 notebooks with very similar configurations. His notebook has been unstable lately and I wanted to do a fresh installation (without all the DELL stuff) for him. He lives about 45 mintues away so I would like to prepare the hard drive image on my notebook (O/S, device drivers, typical utilities, etc.), save off the image to an external drive, then restore the image to his notebook. I can easily do all of this via Acronis True Image (great product by the way). The only gottcha I am worried about has to do with if DELL's XP install disks attempt to lock themselves to a particular motherboard in such a way that when I boot up his notebook it would notice the motherboard switch and refuse to work. I don't think this is the case because DELL XP installation disks never seem to ask for the product key on the sticker attached to the notebook. (My assumption is that DELL O/S installation CD's do some sort of BIOS check to ensure that the target system is a DELL.) But before I go through the process of creating the image I want to make sure it should work.
