I'm on an IBM ThinkPad T42.... when listening to audio through headphones, it sounds REALLY bad..... it's a bit hard to explain, but I'll try... the sound gets crackly/distorted, something like heavy gain/drive on a guitar amp.. even when the volume is low it does this, kinda does a number on the ears. As far as I can tell (but could be wrong because of the nature of laptop speakers), the built-in speakers seem to be fine...
