M9700 XP driver question

Hello all

I've been trying to figure what are the best current drivers for my system and tbh i'm confused. I used driver agent to scan my computer and got these results.

Some of the recommended replacement drivers I have downloaded have had some poor reviews and so I am wary about installing them.

One in particular was this one
nforce_winxp32_15.17_international

Another thing I don't understand is that further down the list I hit the download button and got this driver
nforce_winxp32_15.16_international

My current video driver is - nforce_winxp32_15.16_international - 3DMark06 Score - 5664 (seems low)

Anyways totally confused here. Any help would be great.

I assume the nfoce driver is for the SLI chipset on the motherboard. I'm not sure AW has kept up on the chipset driver for the m9700, so you're probably seeing listings for the standard chipset drivers. Most nforce chipsets are on desktop motherboards.

Not sure why driver agent would show more than one version... I don't use that program.

Thanks for the reply, I think i'm going to start over with a reinstall and take things from there, any good guides on the site for this?

Do you have a respawn disc, or just a windows disc?

With respawn, just put the disc in and follow the directions, and you'll end up with a factory fresh install with everything as it was delivered.

If you have the windows disc, you'll need a floppy disc with the RAID controller drivers on them, or you'll need to use a program called nLite to put the raid drivers into the windows .iso and burn a new cd/dvd for easier install.

After you get the RAID drivers in there, just follow the prompts on the screen.

Once windows is installed, follow this order for driver installation:

Auroraâ„¢ m9700 (17" LCD)

Microsoft Windows XP
Chipset driver
CPU driver
Video driver (NVIDIA)
Audio driver
Modem driver
Network adapter driver
Camera driver
Media reader driver
Touchpad driver
Internal TV-Tuner driver (Optional)
Wireless network adapter driver (Optional)
Finger touch buttons application (Music/DVD/TV)
DVD player application (Power DVD)
CD/DVD recording application (Nero Suite)

(From AW's knowledge base article in their support section.)

After that, just run windows update until your OS is up to date and you're set.

If you've got respawn, you can then make a new image for your hd and save it, so next time you reinstall you can just load the image and start from there.

Here's AW's knowledge base article on installing the RAID drivers and starting the XP install.

There is also this article on installing XP in AW's knowledge base.

You'll do fine, if you have any issues just post here and we'll help out.

The first few times I did a format and fresh install, it was a big deal, but I do it now every six months or so on my main desktop and laptop, and it seems a lot easier once you've done it a few times. Doing it regularly keeps the registry clean, and driver dregs to a minimum.

I use an imaging program to keep a clean image of my install after I'm done. Then next time I load that image, update everything and make another image. That way it saves lots of time with downloading updates and reinstalling basic drivers.

Ok all sorted format wise, was a breeze thanks HH.

I still have a problem and I think it is related to the audio driver. Sound is scratchy when I run certain games but in one game in particular I just get white noise recieving mission comms.

I have even tried an extra copy of said game (falcon 4 allied force) and still experiencing the same issue.

Current driver for SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio - 5.12.1.5500

Just wondering if there is a better driver out there for my system
post #8 of 13
If that's the latest driver from AW, that's probably the best for the system. Soundmax audio is individually set up for each platform, so using drivers for other Soundmax setups likely won't work right...

Have you gone to the game website and checked for others with this issue? If it's only happening in one game, it's likely a game issue and not hardware/driver.

I haven't had big issues with the onboard sound, but I bought an X-Fi Xtremeaudio notebook for my m9700. It's an expresscard component, and it does improve the sound noticeably. Unfortunately, it won't play sound back through the onboard speakers without a slight delay, so gaming isn't an option with this soundcard unless you use external speakers, or headphones... Works great for mp3's through the onboard speakers though, just a problem when there is audio and video that need to be synchronized.

Thanks for the reply HH.

I don't know if I want to throw any more cash at this notebook as I think I've out grown it. Thanks to your help i've at still got a great laptop that i'll probably retire to more mundane duties while I drool over a new gaming system.

Really appreciate your time and the help mate. Great forum!

Update -

It seems F4AF is not the only program im getting this hissing sound. Installed Microsoft flight sim X and ATC does exactly the same thing intermittently. So maybe I do have some sort of onboard problem. Only does it when an AI 'voice' is working.

Hmmm... Did you go through the settings and make sure everything looks correct?

Only thing I can think of would be the driver install order. I found about the driver install order thing from someone else here that had audio issues as the order of driver install can cause issues.

If you weren't having the issue before the reinstall, it's likely software/driver, and not hardware.

When I'm having driver issues, I use a driver cleaner to uninstall the drivers, then reinstall the latest. If you want to try that, download drivercleaner, remove the soundmax drivers, reboot, stop the system when it wants to search for drivers for the sound, then reload the latest driver from AW's site.

After that, open the icon in the systray, the little blue square with the white triangle in it, and make sure the audio settings are correct.

Had the same issue before reinstall. I installed everything as per instructions and tried the driver uninstall reinstall with driver cleaner.

Looks like i've got a ghost in the machine somewhere. What annoys me is the fact all other sounds work absolutely fine. Just the ones which involve an AI voice screw up albiet intermittently.

The only other thing that nags me about it is maybe it is interference of some sort, (seeing as the problem is intermittent) if not that maybe a hardware problem.

Update

Cured it although I havn't got to the bottom of it.
Went into performance and took hardware acceleration down to basic acceleration features. 2nd notch on the slider. Ran sim and no problems whatsoever. All the comms and other sounds came through ok.
3rd notch and the problem returned.
