ATI Radeon HD 4870 Set for July 8 Release

AMD looks to regain market share with the RV770 GDDR5 HD 4870.

Exactly one week from today AMD is set to debut its RV770 chip and the first two cards hat will use it, the Radeon HD 4850 and 4870. While the former can already be bought in several areas and will be available in at least decent numbers upon release, the HD 4870 will take its time reaching consumers.

The use of fresh and speedy GDDR5 memory will unfortunately see the Radeon HD 4870 hit the stores in limited numbers and later that desired - on July 8. As for the dual-RV770 Radeon HD 4870 X2, this one should be released around mid- to late August.

and how does this compare to the new NVIDIA card? I haven't been following.

Cost is reported to be around $300. But still no real comparative benchmark data or reviews. ATIs been pretty tight-lipped about this card, and the 4870X2. There are alot of rumors, however, that state the 4870 will put ATI back in the game.

i hope you're right. maybe some competition would force nvidia to lower the price on the 260/280.

Well, it's not my opinion....just what I've been reading on several other forums. Most of the posts were/are from insiders that seem to 'know something'.
