I've fixed Windows Vista but now I can't startup any software!

I recently had problems with my HP-Compaq 6820s laptop in that it wouldn't boot up due to the MBR becoming corrupted after a bad crash.

In any case, after receiving a copy of VistaPE and a WAIK DVD from somebody on a UK computer magazine messageboard which I've been using for a while, I've finally managed to fix the MBR thanks to a wonderful piece of software called "MBR Fix" which was recommended to me by a member of the Boot Land forums as he used it to fix any MBR problems that he'd had.

I also fixed the startup problem that I later had by using the WAIK DVD but now I seem to have a new problem...

Basically, I can boot in without a problem but everytime I try to click on a program, the program doesn't launch at all. Also, nothing else loads up like Gadgets or the Window [I've forgotten what it's called] which has all the info on your PC or Laptop and this is concerning me greatly.

On another note, I got the following message concerning solving computer problems and I don't know if this has anything to do with my new problem...

Solve computer problems
Click to see solutions Windows has found for your computer.

Whenever I click on the icon that refers to, that doesn't work either.

Does anyone have any ideas on what my next course of action should be?

Would I be able to do the repair using the WAIK DVD that I used to fix my startup problem or would I need a proper Windows Vista DVD?
