I have vista and just yesterday, after I had to reformat and put everything back on it, the lcd does not turn off when I close it. is there a switch inside that might be damaged or is this windows fault? would really like this function to work.

This is unlikely, but there might be a tiny button somewhere near the hinge that gets pushed in when you close the screen. May be that is jacked up. I am not familiar with the 9700, but take a look.

Also, check your power settings in the control panel.

Start->Control Panel->System and Maintenance->Power Options

There may be a setting in there that is not set right.

this is weird. I took the rim off the lcd to see if there was anything. but still didn't work. took the touch controll panell off to see if there was a switch and didn't see anything. I disconected all the wires from the board that connect the lcd and then reconnected, made sure no wires were being pinched and then put everything back together. It works now. wonder what its problem was. I just know that this laptop is touchy.

could be the lcd inverter doing something weird...

If it worked before you reloaded the OS it is most likely a software / driver issue.
Try installing different video drivers and see if you have any luck. I'd also see if you have the problem with / without SLI enabled.

My bet would be the inverter but don't know exactly what that is or whare it is located lol. I do know that when I was moving cords around slightly, the screen turned green on me. so what does that tell ya?

i think the lcd inverter is located under the touch control up top but i will have to search to make sure.. it could be loose...
heres a link showing how to reseat the lcd cable on the m9700... also a video driver could be your issue too so make sure your driver is up to date and is not conflicting with anything else....
