alienware m5550 can't seem to use my samsung lcd tv as a second monitor

Laptop: Alienware m5550
TV: Samsung LNT3253H

I purchased a dvi-d to hdmi cable. I connected the hdmi to my tv and the dvi-d to my laptop. BTW, i have vista home basic and a geforce go 7600 as my graphics card.

My laptop recognizes the connection. This is what my display properties show:



I press fn+f4 constantly and i press source on my tv remote but nothing comes about. A friend with the exact same tv but with a vga cable says that's all he does. Plug in the cables and press "source" on the tv remote and the screen pops up on the tv. Frankly, i haven't exactly addressed this as i've given up about a month ago, but I'm hoping someone in this part of the forums can offer me some much-needed guidance. Thanks in advance.

your tv should turn to HDMI source if it is connected... I would try to restart the laptop while having it hooked up to the tv and close the lid to see if will appear on the screen....

You're using a DVI to HDMI cable right?
i can't get that to work either on the m5550, also with a Samsung LCD.

I bought a DVI to VGA cable, that works great so long as you have a VGA connector on the TV.

the link that marker 01 provided. It's filled with 1's and 2's out of 5. Basically, they're saying, don't buy the cable.

Sorry, that one ws just a cheap example. you can buy a dvi to vga cable at best buy for $25. that's the one i use.
