Dell, my order, and another 7 weeks

Well, I had ordered my IXPS on the 12th.
Today was supposed to have been my shipping date..

So I get this e-mail…

“We have reviewed your order. Although we had anticipated being able to ship your order sooner, we are experiencing an unexpected delay and will not be able to ship this order and any associated orders until on or before 6/8/2004.

No action is required to proceed with the new date, however, if you do not wish to wait, you may cancel your order and receive a prompt refund.

If you have any questions, please contact Dell at 800-289-3355, extension
66966 or email us at us_dell_notify@dell.com.

Please include your order number or customer number with any correspondence.
We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause.”

Now, ever since the 12th, I’ve been keeping up with the order status. Since the 13th it’s been in the “build” stage. And actually, I just called the automatic system and its still in the “Build” stage. Now according to the Dell site, I had to go through the “Kitting” stage first. The kitting stage is, according to Dell..

“Kitting: When a system order is released to manufacturing, the material availability is confirmed and all parts needed to complete the system are placed into a tote. The completed tote is mated with the systems chassis, placed on a conveyor which takes it through to build.”

So, I call Dell, and after screwing around with their automated system, I finally get a person (In India) who tells me that apparently there is a specific part that they are waiting on. So I ask what that part is, and I get put on hold. 10 minutes later, I suddenly find myself in another part of their automated voice system. Finally I find another real person, (in India again), who tells me the same thing, but can’t tell me what the part is that is causing the delay, so he transfers me to a salesperson, (who doesn’t sound like they were from India) who tells me they don’t know what the part is that’s causing the delay..

So then, why the hell is my order status in the build stage after going through the Kitting stage? You’d think, if there was a shortage of parts, they would have found that in the kitting stage yes??

I’m highly frustrated.

This is the kind of thing, I thought I would have gotten if I had bought my machine from Alienware.

If you ordered with an EE CPU, then thats what they're waiting on.

Nope, just the "standard" 3.4 P4

The main use of this machine for me will be 3D animation, and the program I use doesn't get a whole lot of benefit from the EE version. (1.2 seconds in the benchmark scene)

One thing I found out a while ago - just because it says "Build" doesn't mean it's in the Build sub stage. Build in this case just means it's cleared Pre-Production.

Basically, what I was told is that they have a limited number of status positions they can use. Pre-Production means credit check and parts ordering. Build means credit has been passed and the parts are ordered - it does not mean anyone has actually started building the machine, it just means that it's in the factory waiting to be worked on.

The only other status they can give it is "Shipping" or "Cancelled."

What I think you're getting is the overall "Build" segment (which includes Kitting, Build, Testing, and Boxing).

Wow that's a long lead time, either they have a serious supply issue or they have found another flaw in the system.

Well, I hate to say it though, I realy dont have much of a choice.

sorry to hear you have to wait so long i suggest you call customer care and have an extremely large fit about how your unrealistically being forced to wait 7 weeks for a part to complete your laptop. demand some sort of compensation
post #8 of 11
Yeah, if you complain to them (nicely, don't go off at them or they may not be inclined to care) you may be able to get free shipping or some money off.... or maybe a free peripheral. But you have to be persuasive.... like:
I dunno, if its gonna take this long to get here I might cancel the order...
The threat of cancellation and lost commission is all the persuasion you should need
