Alright ... 4080 owners, let me hear you.

Alright, I haven't been posting long, but I've been looking over these forums pretty closely now for a little while. I've pranced around with question trying to widdle down my choices. Cause I need this computer soon, it's just too enticing.

So I'd like to hear from some 4080 owners to encourage me. How's it been working out for you. Do you love it? Help me get it.

And now recently I've been eyeing the 5690 with the radeon 9700, with not too big a $$ gap. It's looks good too. But man, i'm tired of flipping back and forth.

is the heat really going to be that much of an issues with the 4080, does that glossy screen get that annoying, (and I know what to expect of battery life).

So tell to stop prancing around and just get one.

EDIT: I'd be using it mainly for DV editing. Probably nothing professional (but who knows), most likely plenty of little projects.

Stop prancing around and just get one.

It would be helpful to know how you intend to use your new notebook.

well, first off i want to say im in love with my 4080. I love the glossy screen, it does have some glare but I have never had any trouble with it, everything is still able to be seen, I really hate the dull lcd screens. I decided on the 4080 because it was thinner and lighter and it has the glossy screen, this was when both only had the 9600pro turbo. the 9700 is tempting at 8 pipeline but i like the mobility of the 4080 even if its not a big difference. The only trouble I ever ha was that it overheated at a lan one time. I was playing unreal 2004 on a custom map that didnt have fog so it was processing across the whole level, and it was sitting on a cloth covered table with no room to breath really, it shut down and didnt turn back on for 10 mins or so (scared teh crap out of me haha) but worked fine, besides that Ive never had any trouble, I have it on at least 5 hrs a day straight doing 3d animations, video editing, web design, etc and other games without any trouble, but for major lanning I suggest just getting one of the 30 dollar laptop cooler stands. But I cant express how much I love my laptop. hope you love yours.

9700 = Overclocked 9600. We WISH it was 8 pipelines.

Sounds great

Thanks a lot Beastman for your enthusiasm. I'm just about to make a decision and you've helped. And I can deal with the heat as long as it isn't going to fry anything.

Beastman, can you give me your specs on your 4080.

And I think I saw you posting before, maybe about dual display capabilities. Have you set that up on your 4080 or am I mistaken?

I've had noting but trouble with my 4080. It's only 2 weeks old and the Hard Drive is BAD, SAGER thinks. They're shipping me a new HDD. I'm getting NO OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND. I had SAGER install XP PRO when I bought it.

I wish I had bought a DELL dewd.
hmmm..if the hard drive is bad, that has nothing to do with the 4080....dell harddrives go bad too

my friend from work here has a 4080....he loves it...i think the screen is really nice...i can see how it can be annoying at the same time cause of the reflection, but movies, etc, look great!

he has a 2.8 ghz with hyperthreading..it's very fast..and the 128 mb 9600 pro is great too....

i think you need to decide on whether or not you will be carrying this around with you a lot.....if you dont think you will be..i would get the 5690 instead...not even cause of the 9700, but just because of the stability, the casing allows for better heat flow, and the intel chipset over the SiS....

but as for the heat...i notice his 4080 gets hotter than my 5660 in a much shorter period of time....i dont really mind the heat if i'm stressing the machine, but his machine started getting hot when we were loading windows xp on it...

so again, decide if the weight will be a factor, and then your decision will be made....the price difference should not be a factor..this is a big investment and 200 bucks shouldnt be the deciding factor...

The big difference between a Dell and Sager: Both probably have the same number of hard drives go bad, but with a Sager you can get a replacement shipped without waiting on hold somewhere in India for a few hours, and it'll get to you faster.

As far as the 4080 goes, I gave them a lot of thought myself. I ended up going with the 4780, but if my machine's little brother is anything like the one I got, I couldn't recommend 'em more.

You know what, I'm thinking, I'm just going to go with the 5690.

When i think about it all, the extra weight doesn't really bother me. I'll be editing and won't really need to be that mobile (I'll probably just have the powerbrick plugged in anyway). And also, for the same reasons, the extra bulk won't really bother me.

I thought the 4080 looked sleaked, more handsome, but I guess that's not a good reason to base a 2-grand decision.

And if I can avoid the heat issue that the 4080 might have, it'll be another piece of mind.

Thanks for holding my hand guys, it's been tough one deciding as i'm sure you guys can relate.

4080

I love my 4080.

one issue is that the front panel piece on the dvd drive is loose, so it's pretty noisy when running. that's a minor prob though. other than that, the thing is awesome. Especially since the new vid drivers came out! It's a beast, and for a steal. Because it's such a beast, battery life is not that long, but if you hear complaining from people, they have no idea what they're talking about. The fact that this much power even RUNS on batteries is a miracle.

4080, 2.8GHZ P4, 512MB RAM, etc.

For the 4080 owners, what kind of FPS do you get on BF1942: Desert Combat? That is the most graphic intensive game I have that I occasionally play.
Getting mine in 3 weeks

I found that the newer generation notebooks are in fact cooler than the prior generation machines. the 8790 is better designed than the 4780 and has more heat disapation stuff. Of course there is more heat to dissapate, but I've tried out the 4780 (in stores), before I bought the 8790 and my hands don't even break out in a sweat with the 8790.

Therefore, I'd like to propose the theory that the 5690 is as cool or cooler than the 4080 if for no other reason than better case design. I'm always in favor of getting parts and machines that exceed your projected needs determined capabilities for those moments when your activity(ies) require(s) that extra bit of power or tolerance limit(s).

In industrial machinery, you don't get a part rated for only 500 psi lines, when your lines run at 500 psi, you get a part rated for say 600-700 psi in case a line gets backed up or blocked. Same with computers. If all you do is surf the web and type, there may be a time or so when the ability to do something more will come up and you will wish you had the extra capacity. Not to say you should go overboard, but I think the 4080 may not be all you will need.

i owned one not too long ago, but return it due to heating issue that i can barely accept it....other then that its really fast, nice and sweet screen laptop..

if they upgrade gpu to 9700 , i might still consider gettin it again asides its heating issue.

Ive got the 2.8 p4c 512 (might get another stick later) 60gb 5400 rpm hd
No i dont think it was me talking about the monitors, I have pluged in a monitor and worked with it and my lcd running, I had to give a 3d animation lecture and used that and it ran fine. Mine was 1650 with 2day shipping and it dropped 70 bucks right after i purchased, so the things that got me convinced to get the 4080 were:
Money
Weight
Thickness
glossy lcd

the 4080 is much cheaper so it was nice considing it wasnt much under the other models, its the lightest and thinest of this strength of the sagers and the glossy screen just made it a sure thing for me. Whatever you decide Im sure you will love it.

*Oh I thought the 9700-m was 8 pipeline eh not such a big deal then.
