Compaq V5000 keyboard not responding

Hi,
My Compaq V5000's (V5101US) keyboard will not recognize any inputs.....
It was out out use for some time and when I tried to begin using it again, nothing......It is about 2 years old......
Have been told the keyboard may have become unplugged or maybe needs replacing......

Could someone describe in detail or with a pictue/diagram, how the keyboard is accessed........The screws to remove, etc....

Any other ideas of what would be causing the problem and a fix?

Thanks.....

John

Oh god lol...have fun with this problem...:

Go down to the part about removing the keyboard....5-11 More likely than not it's just the ribbon cable came undone.

Well, I followed the instructions in the noted link.......
Hate to say it but the cable was plugged in......
I re-seated it but still no keyboard input recognition.....
Should I just order another keyboard and try it or is here something else to check??

Thanks so much.....

John

The only other troubleshooting thing I can think of is going into the vista/xp boot disc and seeing if any of the keys work.

It's XP......
I don't believe that I have a boot disc.......

I didn't get the system restore(?) discs made either.......
I did do a system restore with no change.....
I know just enough to be dangerous with pc's!!!

Thanks.....

I mean the XP install disc...stick it in and reboot....press a key when it tells you to....if it does anything at that point then no, your keyboard isn't broken.

Hate to be such a dummy but I don't believe that I have an XP install disc......
Preloaded at purchase??

Have a little info sheet that says that the system has a system recovery feature that does not require CD's or DVD's.....
To restore from the hard drive or my own set of disc, which I never got made.....

Ok when you see the HP logo on reboot...hit F10 a few times to see if you can get into the bios. It might not be F10 on your comp. look at the bottom corner of the hp logo screen and see which one says system something or other.

Seems as though NOTHING is working on teh keyboard....PF's, nothing....

Don't have a plug compatible ext kb to try.....

keyboard controllers are known to fail with the dv5000/v5000 as well getting no video on the systems, USB failing.... its all related to the same BGA chip.

Well, how does one determine if this is the problem?

Is there any fix, short of a new main board?

Everything that needs mouse input seems to work and shows correctly on the screen.........

I can put a CD in and it works just fine, it seems.....All mouse commands..........

Thanks.........

I don't think so....this is one of those things where it's just a good idea to backup/remove your hdd and send the laptop in for warranty.

Wish I could.....
The PC has been out of warranty for over a year......
Bought it in APR 2006, has a one year warranty........

I think that I'm going to try to get some kind of ext kb attachec and see it that works.....
If so, order a new onboard kb.....

Good plan???

Did the data ribbon cable running from the keyboard to the mobo get replaced too with the new keyboard. It's possible that the ribbon cable got frayed or kinked or something like that so while the engine is running, the transmission is broken....if you'll excuse the horrible metaphor

Yes, the new notebook KB came with an attached ribbon cable........
Wish that was it but don't seem to be......
Something else must be wrong or open.....
That's unfortunate. The only other thing that it could be would be something wrong on the mobo related to the keyboard since the cable and keyboard are the only other options which have been ruled out.

isn't the ribbon cable for the keyboard a zif? if so, did you close the little tabs on either side of the connector?

this motherboard does have tabs on the sides of the connector that need to be closed for it to function...
