m15x Vista or XP?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to get a m15x with 2.5ghz 3 or 4gb of ram and an 8800m gtx, that being said I'm looking for people's opinion on whether to get vista for dx-10 and future compatibility/patches or xp for its known dependability?

thanks for your input

gaming wise XP is better than vista...Vista gives you DX10 but I havent seen a game that is only DX10 and not DX9 yet... you can buy 4gigs of RAM from newegg for $100 bucks instead of paying $350 bucks from alienware to save you some money...

I’ll say this much about Vista and the m15x. I’ve uninstalled Vista 2 times so far and I’m not going back. It really has nothing to do with the m15x but M$ needs to fix Vista or hurry up with Windows 7… An OS that lags opening calculator is a downgrade.

But, once you finally got her going the 3d performance in Vista vs. XP appears to be identical at this point.
When I ran a 3dmark06 with stock setting I go exactly 9054 on both Vista and XP with my rig.

So there are no driver issues if you install XP instead of Vista?

I want an m17x but am concerned that there might not be XP drivers for, as an example, the blu-ray drive.

Want the m17x with a Blu-ray drive, but I don't want Vista.

So what all of you are trying to say is that you are willing to spend all this money into a DX10 vid card yet you do not want to use DX10... if you are doing that then why don't you go on ebay and buy a m9750 with a 7950 GTX vid card instead. I mean if some of the software you use doesn't work properly on vista then you can dual boot but if you are playing games and have a DX10 vid card then use DX10. And yes there might be some issues with driver support for blu ray on xp.

There is no such thing as a blu ray driver… you just need a blu ray decoder to play movies. CyberLink does this and is included with your order...

If you hurry up right now, you can still order an m15x with XP and a blu-ray player. I know you were asking about the m17x I only bring up the m15x “right now” because as of midnight last night, they are not supposed to be selling OEM versions (or any versions) of XP (June 30 is the deadline when Microsoft will no longer allow you to buy XP). I don’t know why they don’t offer XP on the m17x, maybe because they knew they would not be shipping many before the June 30 deadline.

Fascinating over DX10 is not really a point at the present. It will be “someday”, but as of now XP benchmarks are 20-30% better then Vista when it comes to gaming. You can have all the DX10 you want but until M$ fixes Vista you be enjoying DX10 at horrible frame rates and quality(when compared to XP)… Using history as an example we probably wont see DX10 at its best until Windows 7…

The 8800m GTX scores almost twice the 3dmark06 score then the 7950 GTX, so I’d go with the 8800m regardless of which OS you chose. Furthermore you can always upgrade but Windows 7 is due to hit the shelves in 2010 so….

Thanks for this, Marker01. By "driver," I simply meant to ask whether XP might have trouble recognizing the hardware and the drive might not work properly as a consequence. The rest of your logic re: DX10, Vista, gaming and the 8800m follow mine exactly.

As I've missed the XP cutoff deadline, I'm thinking now that I'll order the m17x, then wipe the drive when I get it, and install my existing copy of XP. Best of all worlds, for my point of view.

WAIT! i just thought of something. I dont know if you'll get driver support on XP for the m17x. you can go AW public driver download page now. if you select XP as the OS (then mobile systems / AW / m17x) there are no drivers found. this "may" be because the m17x is so new, why would you be able to select the m17x with XP OS to begin with if they did not plan on populating this.

BUT, the Vista drivers are already there.

Also, XP drivers may be avaiable under your My Hive account, but i cannot check that as i dont own a m17x. but using the m15x as an example, all Vista and XP drivers are under My Hive account.

you may want to shoot drivers@alienware.com an email asking about XP drivers.

Maybe one of the AW reps around these forums can help us out. Will XP drivers be provided for the m17x?

you could just use all the drivers from the m15x under the drivers downloads... the only two you wont be able to get it is the bios and the alienFx lighting....then get modified drivers for the SLI cards somewhere else...
