8790 2 Different Size Power Supplies

Does anyone know the difference between the (2) different power bricks that come with the 8790? My first GX7 had a smaller power supply w/cooling fan. However, my second GX7 has a larger/heavier PS without a cooling fan. Is there a problem with the original PS or is it just a matter of Clevo/Sager using a different (cost effective) vendor? I'd think that the smaller PS with active cooling would be the better of the two unless there's a problem.

The small one with the fan is loud. Hopefully the big one is silent.

I have the "new" one that came with my Sager, its stealth, no noise what-so-ever, ofcourse it has no fan, but its as cool as they come. VERY happy with mine.

I believe in a post somewhere that someone had talked with a sager techie and the techie said that they were switching to the larger power supplys because the smaller ones got too hot. The big ones are cool and silent though.

there was a thread recently on this...might have been in the 8790 section...

they replaced the power cable i think...
the newer one is a little bigger, has no fans, but is more powerful, and runs cooler..apparently the one with the fans was weaker, and tried harder to keep the power flowing, which is why it runs so hot...

the newer one is just built better i think.....

bok, oresteez how nice of you guys to talk about my story! hehe yup that was me. my cord was coming off of my original power supply (smaller one with the fan) and so i brought it to sager along with my other problems. the sager representative tried to replace my smaller power brick but they didnt have anymore because they stopped shipping 8790's out with the smaller power bricks. he then gave me a bigger power brick which supposedly is the new one that ships out with the 8790s. he specifically told me that the smaller power bricks have a hard time giving power to the 8790s and that the bigger one was the replacement to fix that.

I have what I think is the small power supply since I can see a fan on it. In the week I've had my 8790, I've never seen the fan actually spinning. It does get quite hot. If its plugged in, should the power brick fan be spinning at all times?

The "larger" power supply is rated for 20 volts at 7.5 Amps. That's a lot of power boys and girls!

I hate the non-standard power cord though. =/ I may open mine up and see how feasable it is to mod it to the standard power cord.

Define non standard power cord. Is it the three prongedd end that looks like a clover leaf or what?

check these out...back when my first power cable melted....pc torque sent me another one, cause sager was giving a hard time...they sent me the smaller one on the right...then i got another one from sager..the bigger one on the left.....anyone seen one so small like the one on the right...which btw gets very very hot!!

oh...and one more thing...i tried plugging my power cable from my IBM thinkpad into my friend's 4080....it fits....it charged the battery...i didnt try running the machine with it though...it's only a 4.5 amp power cable....but very interesting nonetheless....
is the connector on the 4080 same as the 8790?

lernz,
I was thinking the same thing. My fan has never come on either. Although, it really doesn't get that hot (same as wristpad during gaming). I have both power supplies right now and the new larger PS definitely gets hotter and is actually louder (slight hum). The smaller PS is practically silent.

My powerbrick died last Monday, it was a standard large powerbrick for the 8890 and it suddenly just pooped out. I was able to contact Sager Tech on Tuesday morning and they were able to issue me a replacement overnight for a nifty 20 bucks. 23 hours later, I am back online, and with a brand spankin new power brick with a cooling fan! Sager rox!

That smaller one on the right it could be possible Sager may have shipped out the incorrect power supply if it's getting really hot. I can't tell for sure because I know they were using different versions. It would help if Sager informed their resellers of changes like this wouldn't it? I'm doubting there ever was a change and why someone told you that I have no idea. There are 2 companies that make them and they use both and have for a long time, but one isn't clearly better than another.

Adam,

Can you confirm whether or not the fan on the smaller PS (same as pictured in your 8790 review) is suppose to run continuously.
I'm looking at mine right now on this computer I'm typing on and the fan at the end of the power supply is not running. The power supply does not look like either in those pictres and measures 6 3/4" X 2 1/4". The output is 7.5A and 150W MAX. Don't confuse it with others that may rate them by their sustained power vs MAX.

I ordered my 8790 with an extra power adapter and I got 1 of each. The fan on my brick is silent and the brick is warm. The larger brick with no fan is just as warm. My opinion, no differences in performance between power bricks.
Oddly enough, the larger power brick that oresteez shows looks a lot like my 8890's:

Input AC 100-240v 2A
Output DC 20v 6A

The connector at wall-side is in fact the three-pin clover that was mentioned. Never had an actual heating problem with it (sometimes warm after heavy use), and no fan.

Does this accurately describe the larger supply?
