Asus S96J screen shutting off issues

Thread Starter
I bought an Asus S96J a while back, and it has worked well for the past year. A few weeks ago however, I started having problems with my screen.

When i turn the computer on, the screen will work for a few seconds. By the time i get to the logon screen, the screen goes almost black. If i inspect the screen carefully, i can still see the background and icons. Its as if the brightness was set to 1% or something.

Right now, i have my laptop connected to a 19" LCD monitor and using it as the main display. Doing that works, fine. But if i extend my desktop, i get the same problem, the screen shuts off.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Did you try adjusting the brightness? fn key + ?? Do you have any of those power-saving programs like power4gear, notebook hardware control, etc..?

Hello, I have done a little research over the night and have come up with a few things. According to my symptoms, my problem is either the inverter or the backlight. I will check them when i get back home later today.

The brightness is not the problem, and I do not use any of those programs.

A few other things to note: When i boot, i can see the screen fine for a few seconds. If i manage to get into windows before it shuts off, the screen has a orange/pinkish tone, which i read suggests an inverter problem not being able to push enough voltage to power the backlight. It could also be a loose connection i suppose.

Does anyone know a good link for disassembling asus notebooks (screen in particular).

Thanks

Does it work when you enter your BIOS?

If it were a loose connection, you'd have that problem from boot-up (this exact thing happened to me before). But if you're taking it apart anyway, you might as well check...

This guide should work: http://www.synnex.com/sid/april06/s96asg.pdf

Hi ubertoast,

I am sorry because I have seen that this post is quite old. I am having the same problem with an Asus Z96J.

Did you find the problem? Is it a hardware problem? What did you do?

Any answer will be very appreciated!

Thank you very much,

Roger

According to one of his follow-up posts, it looks like either his backlight or inverter went out. The only real fix, since I believe the notebook is out of warranty, is to get a new screen or inverter. Screens are rather expensive so instead, I would recommend using an external monitor until you can save up for a new computer.
