Temperture XPS 1730

Hi,

I just recieved my system today and I was wondering if someone could tell if there is a thread just for the 1730 set up? Any links would be appreciated. Thanks!

I also need some advice on what program to use to monitor my temps. The system feels really hot on my lap and even the DVD was hot to the touch when I took it out today.

I have Vista premium
8700 SLI
2.4 ghz
8300 processor

I went into the control panel and enabled SLI. Any other tips are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the help!

Okay on the 1730, how hot is hot? Do we have the temps that we should be running at somewhere here. Can someone please point me in the right direction or something... Please.

My machine is running very hot... hot to the touch, the DVD I took out was very hot also. Is this normal for this high end gaming system?

Any info is appreciated.

Its normal. Its a laptop and its going to be warm. DVD is close to the GPUs so its going to feel the heat as well.

Use HW Monitor to monitor temps. http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

Hey Thanks so much! I really apprciate the help. I had laptops before but nothing ever heated up like this so I was unsure. Glad to hear it's normal for this big guy.

Downloading HW Monitor now.

Thanks again!

ya, i have a m1710 and it gets too hot to touch, its crazy. 1 assume the 1730 is hotter

Umm, actually mine is also hot to the touch and I called Dell to ask them about it. They told me it should not be placed on our laps. LOL That's how hot it gets! I Just got this brand new so it worried me something was wrong.

Anyway I just ran the HW and here are my temps.

Temperature sensor 0 40°C (103°F) [0xC37] (THM_)

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T8300 hardware monitor
Temperature sensor 0 45°C (112°F) [0x3C] (core #0)
Temperature sensor 1 45°C (112°F) [0x3C] (core #1)

GeForce 8700M GT hardware monitor
Temperature sensor 0 67°C (152°F) [0x43] (GPU Core)

FUJITSU MHW2160BJ FF hardware monitor
Temperature sensor 0 40°C (103°F) [0x28] (HDD)

It seems as if the video card is what is drawing most of the heat/power. I haven't really seen people underclocking the cards. Has anyone had any luck with that?

Well I haven't even used mine yet! LOL So I didn't overclock it and I don't know about underclocking it either.

Do we have a normal limit we should be in between? Would anyone have that info and are my temps okay?

Thanks for the help.

Well, I just wrapped up a 2 hour session of TF2. I checked HW Monitor and after about 10 minutes my temps are:

CPU: 37°C
GPU: 53°C

Now remember, my CPU is a T9300 so its going to run cooler than yours. Not sure on temp differences between the 8700s and 8800s. I wouldn't sweat it though. Your temps look ok.

I am sitting idle on my desktop, not running any games and I am getting

CPU 37
GPU 65

My HD is at 40 - also showing 49%

This doesn't seem normal.
use i8kfangui to monitor the temps, its a free program. you can also use everest utlitmate. your cpu temps are within range, i run idle at around 45, and gpu sits at around 50-60. hd normally around 38-39 ish. and i would def not reccomend placing this thing on your lap! you'll burn an xps logo on your crotch! this is a desktop replacement, not really meant to be that portable.

65 idle to me sounds a little bit on the warm side...but to be honest I wouldn't worry yourself over it.

Try putting it under pressure with a demanding game and check the temps and get back, because if those are getting too high then you may want to talk to Dell about it, but otherwise the machine is just going to run hot, remember that buying a 17" XPS is like asking for a desktop in a package 10 times smaller

My M1730 (X9000, 8700 SLI) runs 30~35 (cpu) and 50~52 (gpu) when idle, as measured by i8kfangui. After playing games, the gpu tends to arise as high as 60.
So I feel like this one doesn't seem to get very hot...

Nothing wrong with your temps IMO.....both the 1730's I've had were around those temps idling.......if the fans were on all the time [like clevo] they would be lower.....but then I think dell has done this on purpose to give better battery life when unplugged ....personally I like not having to listen to fans going all the time.

I also used mine on my lap, with my legs sitting on the very edges of the notebook sides so that air was unobstructed for the vents......the only place that was hot is where the DVI port is and that was only when idling/surfing etc because the fans were not going all the time.....playing games,it was coolish there as well because the fans were on.

The max GPU temp I saw on the 8800 powered one was 82 degC [8700's were a little cooler] that was with I8kfangui with the offset adjusted to mimick ntune temps[you need to do this to get the true temps]........so like pdonket says if your getting extreme gaming temps.....then worry about it.

Personally I think it has an amazing cooling system for the power, and are the only notebooks I've owned where the fans turn off in game, loading levels.

Hi everyone,

I called Dell and they had me update the driver. MySLI temps went down but now my CPU and HD went up? This is so strange.

CPU 62
CPU 66
GPU 63
HD 46

Anyone having issues like this?

Okay The dell tech told me it is not reading my temps right now. He said if those were my temps I would be getting blue screens and I am not, but this thing is hoteer now. All we did was change the driver and update me to Vista SP1.

This is the version he made me DL- 7.15.11.7431

Since I did all my temps went up... a Lot!

Anyone have any ideas? maybe a better driver that can help me to run cooler. Even the palm rest is hot now and I have a fan blowing on it.

Thanks

Help with temps/offset on 1730 please!

I was curious about my temps so i tried I8kfangui, but can't get enough offset to make ntune and it the same. There is a 27C difference between them, and I can only go up to 25C offset. Now 2C is close enough for me, but is that a normal offset???

Without the offset my temps show about what someone else said (around 48C) but ntune shows 75 just sitting at the desktop. I have not had any issues with overheat or problems, i just want to know my correct temps. I have been tweaking my setup for Sacred 2 which is coming out soon

Anyone know what's going on or what i can try?

... Well I tried running Everest and I see that my CPU temp was also a little low, but changing the CPU offset did not change it at all, so must be I8Kfangui 3.1 will not work with my system Are other 1730/8800 people using an older version or something?
I would stay away from I8kfangui - since it is unable to control the second fan on the GPU - its actually been shown that it RAISES temps. Remember, this app was last updated close to the end of last year I believe. Its not meant to be used on the 1730 (even the M1710 didnt have support).

As for the drivers, forget about Dell's so called Rapid Release Performance driver - it sucks. If you want an officially sancitioned driver, try NVIDIA 175.32 - its designed specifically for the M1730. Take a look:

Use HWMonitor to check temps... http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

1. Read the FAQ for the 1710.

2. The way the BIOS controls temp is as a compromise meant to minimize fan use - therefore it allows both the CPU and GPU to heat up to a certain level, then cuts the fans in. This means that there *is no* "idling temp". That could be anything between 65 and 45 (for the GPU) depending on where you are in the fan cycle.

3. i8kfangui is an ancient piece of crap at this point for your m1730. Also, you need to add 8 deg cels. to its temp readings. Why bother - when the BIOS in your m1730 does a much better job anyway.

4. Everest Ultimate will allow you to monitor CPU/GPU temp and a whole lot more *in your G15 LCD*. This is quite handy since you can view the temps while playing a game, etc. If you ALT-TAB out of a game, your temps will have dropped considerably before you can see them.

5. The cooling system on the m1730 (at least with the 8800GTX SLI setup) is phenomenal. I'm running the GPU's at 640/950/1500 with no probs in Crysis.
