For disassembly, see the dell site. For example on Inspiron 2200 look here:

Once you get it apart you are on your own. Theoretically it should be easy, unsolder the old jack, procure the correct replacement jack, solder it to the board. Test and install.

I tried a board level repair but without the right tools, knowledge and experience it can be tough. Both my experiences ended in replacing the motherboard.

Good luck

De-Soldering the old jack can be tedious at times because the contacts are so tiny. I usually add a bit of solder to the joint before removal so there's more surface area to contact with the iron. I would also invest in a variable heat soldering station or use the lowest wattage iron you can find.

For desoldering itself, get the pump, not the bulb. The Bulb (unless integrated into an iron) is trash. The pump is far superior and can suck a joint clean in a couple shots. If you can get a good melt on the joint the desoldering pump works like a charm. I haven't had much luck at all with the braid.

Finding the contacts shouldn't be too difficult, the power jack on laptops is a through-mount. Just take your time and be careful not to overheat the board and other nearby components.
