sony vgn-bx61mn ram and cpu issue!

Hello first post..

A couple of questions regarding a notebook. Not particularly interesting but troubling (at least for me).

I have a sony vaio vgn-bx61mn http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProd...y=VN+BX+Series

very happy with it however I would like to know:

1) Would it be possibile to update the cpu with a T7XXX series socket P cpu or better?

2) On the vaio webste it states that max allowed ram is 1.5gb Seems strange...I believe the chipset on this notebook is able to handle even 4gb of memory correct? Of course I would have to use both slots purchasing 2x2gb banks or is it not so simple?

any replies appreciated....

Alex

Hi Alex,

Yeap you should be able to go to any socket P Processor.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L45-s7423 - it was a total budget pile and i got bored one day and did some research.

I had a GL960 with a T2310 pos dual core (even more inferior than your chipset since it was only suppose to support celeron). Now i've migrated to the T7500 and 4 gb of ram, although windows 32-bit vista can't see all of it.

Here's a bit of advice:

Use this guide in determining which processor you want to go to:

Use CPU-Z to determine what type of bios you have:
www.cpuid.com

Update your bios to the latest.

Use HWMonitor from cpuid.com to monitor your temps to make sure your new processor isn't getting cooked from improper installation

I was pretty sure about the processor but needed confirmation.

What seems really strange is this memory limit.
Could it be that somehow the notebook is "limited" via hardware or software by the producing company? A sort of "speciation" solution to keep people from upgrading?

Someone suggested that the chipset could be limited to 1.5gb of ram max and/or the notebook can only accept specific amount of memory....something like 512 or !gb but not more than that.

I really like my notebook and with a little more ram and a better cpu (in the future) I am sure it will serve me very well

anyway thanks for the reply!

it could be that one of the ram modules can not be easily accessible for replacement?

cheers ...

I guess I will just buy an expansion module and try it in out. If it is correctly "seen" by BIOS and windows then I will try a different one. I may be able to repeat the procedure with a 2gb module thus proving viability for an expansion to 4gb. I will try...anyway thanks for the input.

I will also try to find a socket P intel processor. Maybe not a 45nm one since compatibility might be an issue.

I guess what remains non upgradable is the x1300 video card. correct?

thanks

you are correct, the x3100 is the weak link....unless you have an MXM slot or another proprietary type of video card slot - but i highly doubt it

the t7500 is the best bang for the buck. there are faster ones, but the price starts rising too rapidly
