what are the symptoms of a failing GPU?

My brother has a M1530 with a 8600GT. He has this intermitent problem of the laptop not booting all the way to windows. It gets through the windows loading but freeze's with a black screen and cursor before loading the desktop. Until now i thought it was driver related and was planning to do a format, is it possible its hardware?

That guy at the Inquirer definitely has a beef with Nvidia, but there seems to be some truth to the story. We'll see how far this goes, and if Nvidia can survive it. ATI may be the safest option at the moment, at least I hope.
