HP Pavilion zv6000 won't load operating system

I have an HP Pavilion zv6000 notebook and have been having trouble with it. I usually leave my computer on or put it in hibernate mode instead of shutting it down. After not using my computer for a couple days, I came back to use it and got an error message saying "missing operating system" I tried restarting it, and still that message came up and now when I turn on my computer, I get a black screen that scrolls through this message:

"Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (c) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM."

I am a college student and have a lot of important word documents and excel files that are important and that I unfortunately did not back up. Is there anyway to recover those or do I need to reinstall the operating system? I'm not really sure what's going on with my computer and am hoping someone can give me some advice.

HAHAHA I know this error from my old Dell Pentium-3 desktop. You need to boot into the BIOS...F10 on the HP logo I think is the standard, and find the item labeled "Boot Order" (or something to that effect). You need to make it so it doesn't try to boot from PXE (network booting) but boots from the CD drive, then the hard drive.

See...not so bad; sometimes the boot order gets messed up...blame microsoft.

In case you were wondering, the message you were getting means that the system is trying to boot from the network (corporations often have machines boot XP from a single server). Obviously, since there is no one on the other end to pickup the phone, it says "error"...."I give up". Now if you don't have hard drive listed in your boot list then uh-oh.

Hmm, I check the boot order and it goes as follows:
Floppy diskette drive
ATAPI CD-ROM Drive
Hard Drive
Network Adaptor

I don't know what else to check, and to answer the next person's question, I had nothing plugged into the laptop.

Ok I have had this happen to me too. It means that either the bootability of your OS is broken or your hdd is failing. It makes sense that since it couldn't boot from the HDD it is saying "hey goto the next in the list" which leads to the PXE error. Try booting up the vista disc and running a startup repair. In the first place you might want to make sure your hdd is detected at all.
