Blank screen 75% of time on startup... mobo dying?

I posted this elsewhere, so I apologize for reposting but this seems like the right place...

The Problem: My Alienware will not boot up 100% of the time. At best, 20-25%, but I would peg it at more like 10-15%. When it won't boot up, I get a CD drive that clicks either TWO times or SIX times EXACTLY, processor speeding up, and after a minute or two the fans kick in. The screen is 100% black, and things like my external G15 keyboard does not light up.

Some quirks... without fail, after 12 hours of work, when I come home, my computer doesn't have a problem turning on the first time. In fact I CANNOT think of a time it hasn't since this whole fiasco started. Overnight it will normally turn on immediately, however, if I have just turned off the computer or put it into sleep mode, it won't turn on again for some time. I should rephrase that, it will turn on, just to a black screen.

To summarize... my computer has trouble getting past the black screen if it has recently been used/put in sleep mode. I get the 2 or 6 CD clicks, then a black screen.

Computer specs:
Alienware Area-51m 7700
Intel 3.6GHz Proc
NVidia 7800go (which is recognized as a 7900go for some reason)
1GB of RAM
1 Year Old, replaced HD by Alienware

When the computer is on, it runs smooth, cool... it runs great. I can play CS:S on High Settings (without HDR) at about 90-100fps steady... WoW is fine too... I'm guessing this is a motherboard problem but the dang thing still turns on and runs relatively fine.

There is a strong possibility that it could be a video card problem, but specifically.. I'm not sure. I am using stock drivers for that card, but as I said earlier, it gets recognized as a card its not.

I think it may be a mobo problem now. At first, because it would turn on, I thought it couldn't be... but perhaps it is. I know there are brighter minds than mind, so I ask you all for help. If ANYBODY can help me... I thank you so much. This is at most, an inconvienience but if it's a problem I can fix, I'd like to get that done, and hopefully prevent future damage. Thank you.

By any chance, would you be able to try resetting your CMOS to see if this changes anything?

I recommend calling our Tech Support to do this over the phone. Let me know if this helps!

Thank you for the reply James. I am currently at work, so I will try this out as soon as I get back home.

So let's say this has no effect on my computer. Are we looking at a mobo failure? As far as my video card... could this have anything to do with different power states? I'm trying to find the original article I read... but I can't find it. Essentially it had to do with the video card not recognizing the lid was open or something.

Option numero dos... if this CMOS reset fixes it all... how can I prevent this from happening again?

If resetting the CMOS battery does not show a difference, then the issue may definitely be hardware related (motherboard, component). In this case, I'd strongly recommend calling our Technical Support team to arrange for a repair.

If the CMOS issue does fix it, I would recommend buying a replacement CMOS battery (inexpensive and found out convenience stores) as the old one may have depleted.

Please keep this thread up to date.

Thank you for your reply again James. It's going to be about 4-5 hours before I get off of work... if all goes well I will hopefully be able to update you tonight.

I successfully reset the CMOS, but it didn't make too much of a difference, besides making me switch from RAID to SATA. At this point, I have no clue. I checked the motherboard and looked at everything else... it seems all fine. Nothing burnt.

Unless it's an inherently faulty part? I've taken very good care of it, (kept it 1-2 inches off the ground, never really moved it, etc. etc.)

What steps should I take from here? Call Alienware directly?

It's no problem, thank you for all your help so far James.

I'll try and send you my account details this weekend as I won't get around to contacting tech support till then.

Again, I cannot thank you enough for trying to help me. I never expected an Alienware rep to help. Thanks!

I had this same problem not even a year ago. My 7700's motherboard fried and the screen was blank 90% of my boot attempts...

And thanks for helping AW-James!
