ml3108 cpu swap...Am I doing something wrong?

Hi

The CPU on the Gateway ML3108b is a Sempron 3400+. I tried to upgrade it during the weekend and this is the result:
1- With the AMD Turion MK36 the laptop turn ON, the fan spins but the screen stays OFF.
2- With the AMD Turion X2 TL50 the laptop turns ON, I can access the bios but can't boot into windows. Instead I get this message:
"FATAL ERROR !!! Please change CPU!!!"

Any suggestions?
Thanks

maybe you should stick with the amd64 cpu instead. it is quite a jump from a sempron to a turion. Also see if u can get the latest bios first

cheers ...

I thought that swapping from sempron to turion or turion x2 (socket S) should work similarly to swaping a celeron M400 or 500 to a duo core?
I can't find any bios update in the gateway website.

same socket type does not always translate to an simple upgrade. you might have to search the net for some bios that is relevant to the board first.

I found this:

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...6171Rsp2.shtml

So my mother board supports Turion processors. Now what's left is to figure out how to make it recognise the MK36 or the TL50.

I think the motherboard on the ML3108b is the same as the following models. Can anyone confirm this?
MX3410 --> TL50
MX3418 --> MK36

UPDATE:
After a couple of hours of googling I found that the Gateway MX3410 and the MX3418, and the eMachine A-10, A-12 and A-14 share the same Mobo as the ML3108b. Those models have a bios update to support vista but the ML3108 does not as it has been upgrade to the latest bios at the factory level.
Anyways, I downloaded the bios version 79.10 and re-flashed the rom in my laptop just in case that the one in my laptop was corrupted.
I noticed when comparing the sempron to the Turion and the Turion x2 that the sempron had a layer of plastic to protect it from getting in contact with the heatsink. Using a tape I wraped the top of the Turion and the Turion x2 (all the top apart from the core area.
Result: the Turion MK36 is know working fine. I also undervolt it using Orthos and RMclock and the laptop is stable.

Question: With the Turion TL50 I'm still getting the following message: "FATAL ERROR !!! Please change CPU!!!"
Does this mean that this CPU is faulty?
thanks

not necessarily, it could be that the bios cannot recognize it correctly

I think you're right as I can't use one of the memory slots with the MK36. If I put ram in slot 1 the computer refuses to boot.

What I don't understand is why my laptop ios not working properly or at all with either the MK36 or the TL50 when the bios I'mm using is the same as Gateway MX3418?

This is a link the motherboard specs and I though it is supports Turion.
I don't know what I'm missing.

it still leaves open the question of the "correct" bios. a revision number difference? maybe compmann and spinitch can take a shot at these

Sorry to bring up an OLD thread, but I have been trying to do the exact same thing today. I have a Gateway MX3311b laptop equipped with a Sempron 3200+ Socket S1 processor. The motherboard of my laptop is the same as the original poster, and I have updated to the latest bios. I also scanned around to try and find whether the Turion X2 equipped laptops with the motherboard used the same bios, and it turns out they do. The motherboard part number is:
4001189RMotherboard w/NVIDIA C51MV w/o 1394 (FRU)

And further details can be found here:

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...01189Rtc.shtml

So I have installed the Turion X2 TL-50 into the laptop, and as naton discovered, the message 'FATAL ERROR !!! Please change CPU!!!' comes on screen.

It could be a faulty processor, as it was purchased second hand from eBay, but I'm hoping I can find a way to sort it out without having to replace the CPU.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Phil

I personally feel that going from a Sempron to a Turion is a bit much.

I understand your point, but you can get my laptop with the Turion processor, same motherboard, same BIOS revision. The Sempron version is the MX3311b and the Turion X2 version is the MX3410.
As mentioned above, from my response to naton, that the "same" BIOS version does not necessarily translate to the <same> BIOS.

Have you tried to get a hand on the MX3410 BIOS and try updating it first?

Yup, it's definitely the same file. Just MD5'd them both to make sure.

Intéressant. Let me try to "summon" some experts/gurus ...

*appears in a dark puff of smoke from q's summoning spell*

I AM HERE!

anyway, my guess is theres some subcode revisions made to this particular CPU that the BIOS doesn't support. I had to replace the motherboard in my desktop because of that, because, while it supported the AMD X2 4400+, it didnt support the 4400+ that I bought because of changes to the production along the way

A chaotic circle of support to the demigod computer

Are we now being required to dance around the fire before the chanting?
