its not a required part of the summon, no, but if you really want to...

but I wouldn't suggest trying to do part swaps on a computer in front of an open flame

anyway, my guess is theres some subcode revisions made to this particular CPU that the BIOS doesn't support. I had to replace the motherboard in my desktop because of that, because, while it supported the AMD X2 4400+, it didnt support the 4400+ that I bought because of changes to the production along the way
So we are talking about the revision code within the mainboard?

no changes in the CPU itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepping_(version_numbers) (very brief but explains what I'm talking about)

Wait a minute, so what happen if the owner of the Turion machine blows her/his CPU? Would the replacement then not be working?

what happens in warranty situations is, if the manufacturer can't obtain a model of processor that works with the board anymore, then they would update the board to work with the new stepping, and replace the board along with the processor when they have to use a new stepping processor. the two nearly-identical different boards for the M68xx line is likely one example, but its hard to know for sure since they seemed to be interchangable most of the time.

stepping changes don't always make things incompatible, but there are times when it happens, which is I believe what is happening here

So, Hopelessness, any more diggings and new findings on your part?

Unfortunately not, I need the laptop for uni during the week so I'm not planning on ripping it apart again until the weekend. I get the feeling I'm not going to be able to get the CPU working on this motherboard, but I'm going to buy a spares / repair laptop to breathe some life into my laptop and I'll see if I can get anything working with that.

Thanks all for the help so far.

Update:
I've also tried a TL52 and TL60 both borrowed from working laptops.

I thought I owe to update this thread. The ML3108b I posted about in 2007 was sold in 2008. A couple of weeks ago I was in the hunt for a cheap laptop. Since I knew the ML3108b inside out I bought one. I also bought an MT3422 about a week ago. The MT3422 was bought for cheap as it is faulty. I bought it because it uses a Turion X2 TK53 CPU. I tied the TK53 on the ML3108b and I was greeted with the following error message: "FATAL ERROR !!! Please change CPU!!!"

For a long time I thought that I couldn't upgrade the ML3108 because of a BIOS limitation (a sort of a white list). Now, I know that the ML3108b cannot be upgraded to a Turion X2 because of a hardware limitation.

So for all of you who are reading this thread, the ML3108b and any of its brothers which are sold with a Sempron CPU cannot be upgraded to a Turion X2.

not a problem. I got the name wrong. It's MT3422 and not MT3822.
