D630 touchpad is driving me crazy! Help!

Ever since I got this D630, I've loved it...except for the touchpad! It lags like crazy. When I move my finger, it takes at least a second for me to see the cursor move. Is this a defect or have other users experienced this as well? If so, is there a fix? Do I need to have the touchpad replaced??

I Googled a bit and I've heard that the Alps touchpads have this problem, while the Synaptics touchpad's don't. Any insight is appreciated.

I'm assuming you've tried all manner of driver settings? I personally haven't heard any D630 users in my work area (and there are quite a few) complain about slow touchpad movement. It could be a defective touchpad we're looking at.

Does the trackpoint work properly? How about an external mouse?

Yep, I've tried tons of different settings and have even tried using generic drivers. It seems to be a hardware problem. The trackpoint and external mouse work perfectly. It's just the touchpad that seems to lag. I was hesitant to replace the touchpad because in my searches it sounded like I wasn't the only one with the problem, and if there are a bad batch of touchpads out there, I didn't want to end up with another bad one. It'd be great if I could get a new replacement with a fingerprint reader.

If you're under warranty you won't get one with the fingerprint reader. Just another plain one. But I haven't heard anything like this and I have 3 customers with fleets of D630s numbering in the 100s.

Definitely covered under warranty though.

My company issued Dell Latitude D620 laptop's touchpad made by Alp exhibits the same problem. Getting the latest driver and tweaking it doesn't help. Really annoying.

How the touchpad behaves in bios or under some dos programs? If still the same then confirm the touchpad is faulty. If it is working good under real mode, then you are having driver problem.

I hate D630 touch pad because of no scroll bar function zzz...

No touchpad has scrolling built in that I'm aware of. It's all a hitch in the drivers. Make sure you're using the Synaptics touchpad drivers on your system. The D630 has the same touchpad in it as my D820 and I'm sitting here using Windows 7 and am able to scroll all I want from the trackpad.

You should check the connection from the palmrest to the motherboard.
remove the power button plastic.
remove the keyboard.
just to the left of where the left <SHIFT> button was, and just under the palmrest plastic, you should be able to see where the connector goes into the motherboard.
This needs to be checked/cleaned/and reconnected. you will need to remove the palmrest plastic to get access to it.
