Presario v5204nr - Not Recognizing Hard Disk

Thread Starter
I have a Presario v5204nr notebook that will not recognize that there is a hard disk installed. I used the f-11 recovery and got the BSOD when it rebooted. I tried to install from a Windows CD but when it asks which partitiion to install to, it says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. I have tried several hard drives (sata) and same effect.

I then tried to install to an external hard drive. It went through copying the files then BSOD after the 1st reboot.

I put that same HD back in the system and tried to boot again. It came up with the Windows XP logo then BSOD.

I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ChriZ

Do you have another laptop hard drive that you can try out to see if the unit itself is seeing hard drives? It could be that your hard drive is starting to fail...

That is impossible unless you disabled the SATA function in the BIOS

Yes, it's possible that the mobo automatically switches it to IDE for the boot process....smart thinking since no one really needs the full SATA bandwidth over compatibility during boot (EVGA 780i).

How will Windows even recognize that a hard drive is there if it does not have the drivers to function that channel? I am not saying you are wrong, I am just trying to learn...

I'm not even exactly sure how I was able to install XP SP2 using a sata harddrive. When I got into windows it showed up in the device manager as an IDE drive.

I am referring to when the setup process is beginning, how does it even recognize the drive when you are at the point to format and load? You have to hit "F6" to load the sata driver off a floppy so windows can recognize it

I didn't apparently. I though I would have to but it just saw it right off the bat. That's why I'm betting the mobo/hdd might have some sort of compatibility mode so you can install XP on it.

The motherboard will give you the option to disable/enable the Native SATA Support. The only way I was ever able to install Windows XP without that sata driver was by disabling it in the BIOS. I have done it to hundreds of systems and it was always this way. Even the newer models like the dv2/6/9 are the same way...
