Toshiba L25-S1193 Problems

Hi, I am new to the forum and this is my first tread. I had a couple of questions that I cant seem to find the answer to anywhere. I have a Toshiba Satellite L25-S1193. I obtained it I guess three years ago on black friday at Circuit City for $250 bucks. I love my laptop and really want to keep it, but it has been giving me a lot of trouble over the past year. Im not a total idiot when it comes to computers, Im just really causious about doing anything major to my latop because I would hate to screw it up and be force to buy a new one. So if some of my questions sound stupid im sorry.

One of my buddies sudgested upgrading the CPU to give it a little more push, if you know what I mean. It has a Intel CeleronĀ® M Processor 370, 1.50GHz, 1MB L2, 400MHz FSB. I guess my first question is what is the newest processor I could get that my mother board could handle. Im pretty sure that the newer CPU's wont fit in the socket on my monther board, im not exactly sure though. Also are there any other upgrades that I might need to make to get the most out of that processor. Ive already got the max amount of RAM in there, which is 2gigs. I also am going to upgrade the hard drive, need more space for random crap!

Another problem that I have had with it is that it will over heat and shut off. I know that this has been a problem with a couple of other people from the research I have done. I baught a cooler to sit it on when im working and that seems to work fine. But if im going to the length of opening her up and changing the CPU i wondered if there was anything I could do to fix this. Like upgrade the fan or change the adhesive stuff (its called actic something I just cant remeber).

The last problem I have is with my DVD drive. It wont play DVD's, atleast not correctly. They are always skipping and stuff or the audio is off like some old kung fu movie . Ive changed the driver and ran all of this other stuff to try and fix it but nothings working. Also it wont play CD's, it will copy and rip them but wont play them through the speakers (it skips).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks .

time for a good clean up, take it apart, apply new thermal paste (AS4) on ur cpu, clean out the fan and heat sink, upgrade to a faster/bigger drive and voila, u have another 3 years on the comp. Forget about the cpu upgrade on this machine, aint worth it.

cheers ...

Definitely not worth the investment.. just in case, check Toshiba's website for a Bios update and then redo your driver/firmwares for your DVD burner.

If you are disassembling the laptop, and cleaning the processor and heatsink Arctic Silver 5 is the name of the thermal paste. Apply as directed. Too much is as bad as too little or none. If you are not going to disassemble now, get a can of canned air and blow out the fan areas. Wipe of any surface dust on the fan covers first so you dont blow that inside the laptop. Isolate the fan blade with the end of a paper clip to keep them from over spinning and keep the can upright or you will be spraying moisture inside of the laptop (not good). Do this every couple of months. Beware of BIOS updates. If the update does not fix a problem you are experiencing, then leave it alone. Its an easy way to get a bad flash and turn your laptop into a 6lb doorstop
