I just got my 8600 and i noticed that on my systray the icon that allows safe removal of hardware is always there and the device connected is the qsi cdrw/dvd sbw-242. is there anyway to make it now show up as a removable hardware?
well it is removable hardware, so i think not.

If you right click on the task bar, go to properties and then click the "customize" button by the "Hide innactive icons" entry, you can set that and any other system tray icon to be hidden all the time.

but that icon is never inactive as long as the burner is connected...oh well. it's ok. i'll just leave it there.

In the customize panel, you can set things to "always hide" regardless of whether it's active or not. Also, you can set things that go idle to "always show." Works great!

Hope that helps!

yea, i'm aware of that. except that creates a problem when i plug something into my usb port like my usb flash memory or my external hdd...lol

Theres no pleasing you then
You'll probably have to make a compromise, either leaving it as it is now, or having it always hidden.

Well maybe there is a solution.
In WINXP, at least as far as I know, there is no need to use this icon to eject the for example USB stick or external HD. Just unplug it and you are fine. I do this on all my system and really NEVER had any problems with data loss what so ever. Then you can hide the icon and it still works.
Althugh be careful if you have W2K cause this way it doesn't work on W2K
Hope I could be of help

Another question about the drive. Is it supposed to be screwed in or is it a different mechanism holding the drive in place? I just looked at mine and there is no screw there.

Mine wasn't screwed either and I'll keep it that way as I have a battery and an additional HD for the bay

Check the box that ur laptop came in, it should contain a screw for it. I put the screw in since i won't be swapping anything in replace of it but i don't see a real point to screwing it in unless

I was under the assumption that once you screwed it in that it would no longer show up as removable media. Obviously I haven't done it yet as you can tell. I have no answer for you...

LOL

Well i have alot of USB device on my laptop i have a bay battery myself so i never screwe it on. i always disconnect everything with out using that and it seem to work just fine non of my device had problems. i have been doing this as long as win XP has been out. remember plug and play. that is just the way i look at it.

No it still shows up. As I have nothing else to replace it with one of the first things that I did was screw that it place, adds a little stability to it I think. Anyway, I just hide the icon, as mentioned you can unplug mice, USB drives, etc without using this safely, just remember not to do it whilst in the middle of a data transfer!
