Nearly dead E1705 - water spill!

My lovely dog helped me spill a full glass of water on my laptop while it was running!

I unplugged it and flipped it over popping out the battery... but not before it shut off on its own. I disassembled quickly and cleaned up as much as possible leaving it to sit overnight.

Today I picked up some dust-off and contact cleaner and cleaned the areas that had been exposed to water. After drying I put it all together and tried to boot up.

Got the flashing LEDs but no boot. Damn. Never stopped flashing so no specific post error.

Discovered though after some reading and thinking and pulled a stick of RAM out. Boots! Doesnt boot with any memory in SlotB but will with SlotA. I'll try some more cleaning and see if I get lucky but for now I can check mail at least. XP with 512mb is at least usable.

Just thought I would share!

good luck, plenty of people have been able to recover from a spill. i myself spilled coke on my old m170 and after several hours of cleaning it was just fine.

Pickup a nice 2gb stick or 1gb stick depending on your needs now that ram is so cheap! You certainly lucked out seems these days that more and more spills are definitely becoming recoverable.

I spilled a full cup of coffee into my e1705 laptop not once but twice! The first time when it was about two weeks old, I thought I was going to be sick. In both cases I was able to completely clean and fully dry all parts and get the machine running again. I replaced the keyboard, which eventually was dried and usable again.

Making sure everything is bone dry is the key, use a hair dryer on low. You should fully remove the main board from the chassis to get underneath it completely. Compressed air to force the water out of under the surface mount parts.

So far so good! Machine is slow but I havent had a chance to really really check the memory slots (out of town, no lappy) but will do soon. Failing that I'll dump a larger memory module in.

Thanks!
