Would appreciate if anyone could answer the questions at the bottom of this post.
I have 2 laptops that I recently re-installed the OS on:
Satellite Pro M70 (PSM75) - reinstalled Win XP Pro SP2 from the Toshiba Recovery CD, and then upgraded to SP3.
Satellite 5105-S702 - installed Win XP SP1 from a retail CD, (because the Toshiba Recicvery CD gave a "wrong machine" error message), and then upgraded to SP3.
I recently tried to setup an ad-hoc "peer to peer" Wirelss Network connection between my 2 laptops (SatellitePro M70 and Satellite 5105-S702) without a "wireless hub or router, based on a previous successful attempt (about 2 years ago), thanks to the advice received then on this forum from gOOnter, Richk and Revenet, and also to information in articles found on the internet, but this time I was only partially sussesful.
To summarise, the procedure that I followed was :
- assigned a unique Computer Name to each laptop.
- assigned a common Workgroup name on each laptop.
- enabled file sharing sharing with files to be shared on each laptop.
- disabled Windows Internet Connection Firewall on both laptops (temporarily, until after the wireless network has been established)
- enabled Windows XP Automatic Wireless Network Connection on both laptops (In Wireless Network Connection Properties Window>Wireless Network Tab>placed checkmark in the box next to "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings").
- created a wireless network on both laptops (Wireless Network Connection Properties Window>Wireless Networks Tab>click Add button>Wireless Network Properties window>created Network name(SSID), and disabled Data encryption and set Network Authentication to Open Mode>checked "This is a computer-to-computer" ad-hoc network; wireless access points are not used">clicked OK>Advanced Button>Advanced Window>clicked circle next to "Computer-to-Computer (ad hoc) networks only">clicked Close>clicked OK button on WirelessNetwork tab).
- set the IP addresses, and the default Subnet masks in the TCP/IP Properties (located under the General tab of the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" box) on both laptops.
- joined the wireless peer-to-peer network on both laptops (right clicked Wireless Network Connection>View Available Networks>Choose a wireless network>clicked connect ---> a connection to wireless network box popped showing the progress of of the connection process, with the message - "please wait while Windows connects to the wireless network ...wiaiting for the network")
At this stage only the Pro M70 laptop connected to the network, as confirmed in the Wireless Connection Window.
The Sat 5105-S702 wireless network connecting process froze in mid-stream, and although it said "completed" in the connection progress box, in the subseaquent Wireless Connection Window it indicated "Acquiring Network Address".
On both laptops, also checked the Wireless Network Connection Status (i.e. start>connect>Wireless network connection>right click>status). This showed that the Pro M70 was sending signals, but not receiving, and the Sat 5105-S702 was not sending or receiving.
- In Network connections I clicked on My Network Places>View workgroup computers - the Pro M70 displayed the folder it was setup to share on the wireless network, but the Sat 5105-S702 did not show the foder it was setup to share on the wireless network.
Therefore I have concluded that the setup of Pro M70 on the adhoc wireless network has been successful, but not setup of the 5105-S702.
It also occurred to me that there might be a wireless driver problem with the 5105-S702,so I checked the wireless adapters in device manager :
Satellite 5105-S702 Wireless Adapter: Toshibi Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card.
In the device manager Driver tab, there is only 1 driver listed - wlluc48.sys , in pathwayC:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\wlluc.48.sys
Satellite Pro M70 (PSM75): Wireless Adapter: Intel PRO/Wireless 220BG Network Connection.
In the device manager Driver tab, there are 2 drivers listed - w29n51.sys , in pathway C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\w29n51.sys, and w29NCPA.dll - in pathway C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\w29NCPA.dll.
This made me think that perhaps that there might be a wireless driver(s) missing for the 5105-S702, as a result of installing the OS from the retail version of Win XP Pro SP1, rather than Win XP Pro from the from Toshiba Recovery CD.
Would appreciate if anyone could advise me:
- what are the correct set of wireless drivers are for the 5105-S702 ?
- if not the wireless drivers, what else could be causing the 5105-S702 not to connect to the adhoc peer-to-peer wireless network ?
Thank you
