Receiver or speakers?

Thread Starter
Well I tried to plug my friend's Altec Lansing 5.1 speakers into my SPDIF port and I was NOT getting surround sound out of them, so I'm beginning to suspect I'm totally ignorant of what SPDIF is, and how to actually get surround sound out of my 8887.

Could someone explain? Do I need to plug this into a receiver, which then has the speakers plugged into that? Or is there some sort of 5.1 surround-sound speaker system I can plug directly into this thing?

(BTW, yes, I was using the provided Y-cable in the SPDIF port - also tried it without...)

So...anyone have any input? What's the cheapest method of me to get some quality surround sound out of this thing? Am I going to have to plunk down $350 on a receiver/speaker combo?

Any help appreciated.

Do a search for SPDIF. This is one of the most posted about problems in these forums.

Enable SPDIF

You have to enable SPDIF in the Bios.
Also you have to select 5.1 surround speakers in the realtek audio drivers advanced menu.

That will get things working...beautifully if I might add...
