Drivers for Satellite 5105-S702 laptop

After receiving a "wrong Machine" error message when I attempted to reinstall WinXP Pro on my Satellite 5105-S702 laptop using the Toshiba Recovery CDs supplied with it, I decided instead to install the retail version Win XP Pro SP1 on the laptop.

On completing the retail version Win XP Pro SP1 installation, and prior to upgrading to Win XP Pro SP3, I installed some (15) Toshiba drivers and utilities that I had downloaded from the Toshiba USA website a couple years ago :

1. Toshiba ACPI Common Modules for Windows XP/2000/98SE, s140acpx.exe, version 5.03.00, Release date 05/10/02

2.Toshiba Console for Windows XP/2000/98SE, z610console2.exe, version 3.00.02.100, Release date 02/27/02

3. Toshiba Controls for Windows XP/2000, s511ctlx.exe, Version 2.01.29.5000, Release Date 05/14/02

4. Synaptics Touchpad/ClearPad driver for Windows XP/2000, s511tpad2.exe, Version 6.3.3, Release Date 06/19/02

5. Synaptics Clear Pad Application for Windows XP/2000, s511cpap2.exe, Release Date 06/19/02

6. Toshiba Touchpad Enable/Disable Utility for Windows 2000/XP, s140tpenx.exe, Version 2.01.01, Release Date 05/10/02

7. Windows XP/2000 Display Driver for nVidia GeForce4 440 display adapters, s511vidx.exe, Version 28.46, Release Date 05/14/02

8. Toshiba Display Hotkey Utility for Windows XP, s500dhkx.exe, Version 1.00.01.00.02, Release 10/01/01

Now I suspect that I have not installed all the drivers that are required for the proper functioning of the laptop.

Question - can anyone provide me with a list of all the other drivers that I should have downloaded and installed ?

Furthermore, I have also I have installed the following peripherals:

- D-Link 7-Port USB Hub - connected to one of the USB1.1 ports on the laptop
- Epson C20UX Printer - installed using the software CD supplied with it, and then connecting to one of the USB ports on the D-Link USB Hub
- Canon Lide 25 Scanner - installed using the software CD supplied with it, and then connecting to one of the USB ports on the D-Link USB Hub

- Belkin PCMCIA USB2 card - installed using the software CD supplied with it, and then inserting the card into the PCMCIA slot
- ABSPlus USB2 External hard Drive - installed by connecting to one the USB2 ports of the Belkin PCMCIA USB2 card
- Sagem 800-840 Fast (ADSL) Modem USB2 - installed using the software CD supplied with it, and then connecting to one the USB2 ports of the Belkin PCMCIA USB2 card

Questions :

- Should the peripherals be disconnected &/or uninstalled before installing the missing drivers ?

- Would installing, at this stage, the missing drivers downloaded from the Toshiba USA website, adversely affect the proper functioning of these peripherals ?

- Would installing, at this stage, the missing drivers downloaded from the Toshiba USA website, cause any conflicts with drivers installed by upgrading to Win XP Pro SP3 ?

Would appreciate any answers/advice that anyone can provide

You got the wrong machine error message because you either updated the BIOS or had the motherboard replaced and your restore cd does not "recognize the machine"

have u checked again against the toshiba support site for the drivers? the last time u were there was 2 years ago, it migh have some more updates now. or just verify the device manager and see what else is showing yellow exclamation. other than that, i'd leave it to SP2, then SP3 to fill the gaps in drivers

I have done an exhaustive check of the drivers, and other non-driver software, that are available for download on the Toshiba USA website. Here are the results :

A. Drivers:

There is 1 driver that has been issued since 2002 (Driver # 13 below).

I carried out searches on the Toshiba USA website for downloads for the Satllite 5105-S702, and here are the results:


Drivers for Win XP:
Selecting 5105-S702, and Refine by "Windows XP", and by "Driver" brought up a list of 12 drivers, 6 of which I have already installed (shown in bold). In the order listed on the website (in descending release date order), the 12 drivers are :

Drivers for Win XP SP2:
Selecting 5105-S702, and Refine by - "Windows XP SP2", and by "Driver" brought up a list with only 1 driver, therefore making it 13 drivers in all for the 5105-S702:

13. Toshiba Bluetooth Stack for Windows XP/2000, bt 40036t.exe, Version 4.00.36(T), Release date 04-28-2006, 26.56MB.

This is the newest driver, and I have not installed it.

Therefore I have not installed 7 drivers (in plain type) of the 13 drivers listed above.


Questions :

- Bearing in mind that the 5105-S702 is running on Win XP Pro SP3, should I install any of the 6 "missing" Drivers for Windows XP plus the 1 missing driver for Windows XP2 ?

- Are there any drivers that I should not install ?



Non-Driver Software:
For Win XP:
Selecting 5105-S702, and Refine by "Windows XP", and by "All Categories", brought up a list of 31 items, including the 12 drivers for WinXP listed above.

In addition to the drivers, there are 18 other relevant Toshiba Applications/Utilites/User guide/Firmware Updates listed, which I refer to here as non-driver software.

I have already installed 11 of these, which are shown in bold. In the order they are listed on the website (approx. in descending release date order), the 18 non-driver software items are :

Selecting 5105-S702, and Refine by "Windows XP SP2", and by "All categories", brought up a list of 3 items, 2 of which are the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack (Driver # 13), and Firmware Update for DVD Drives (non-driver software # 1) previously listed above, and one other non-driver software item that is not already listed for Win XP, and which I have not installed. This is :

19. Toshiba Bluetooth Monitor for Windows XP/2000, bt monitor xpsp2.exe, Version 3.00.32, Release Date 09/01/04, 1.04 MB.

In summary I have not installed 8 (in plain type) of the 19 non-software items listed

(This gives a total of 15 items (7 drivers + 8 non-drivers) that I have not installed)

Question: Should I install any of the 8 non-driver software items ?


Would appreciate any answers to my questions concerning the drivers and non-driver software.

Other than the "13. Toshiba Bluetooth Stack for Windows XP/2000, bt 40036t.exe, Version 4.00.36(T), Release date 04-28-2006, 26.56MB." i dont see why you should be bothering with others, now that you have SP3 installed and being running smoothly. And even so, i watch out for what BT devices you will be using, before applying this driver.

This is may take into your question, if you are not experiencing any problem, don't bother with the drivers and non driver software. If no exclamation point present in the Device Manager then all the necessary drivers are loaded properly. If you don't miss it, most likely you don't need it...

There is 1 exclamation mark in Device Manager>Other Devices>PCI Modem.

I don't know what this refers to - the V90/56K modem ?


The p2p adhoc wireless network setup problem was resolved by installing the "Toshiba Registry for IRQ Routing" utility, and probably also the "Toshiba Wireless LAN Driver for Windows XP V 1.12.110-RC2", but wouldn't have known they were required if I hadn't experienced the problem.


Also had a problem when the DVD/CD-RW Drive refused to play a DVD video, and the error message displayed indicated that a DVD decoder was not installed. Resolved that by downloading and running a DVD Decoder Checkup utilty, which directed me to a webpage where I downloaded the Sonic Cineplayer DVD Decoder pack at a cost of US$ 14.45. This might have been resolved at no cost, had I installed the "Toshiba Media Player", which might include the required DVD decoder.


There may be other potential problems that I'm not aware of as yet, either because I'm not using the particular devices / ports, e.g. bluetooth, IR remote control, Ethernet, SD card slot etc., or because there are problems that exist that are not sufficiently dramatic to draw attention.


So either I wait until problems occur, or I pro-actively install the "required" (?) missing drivers and non-driver software (in the correct order (?)), that would eliminate potential problems, and ensure that the laptop is running optimally.


Of course I don't wan't to create any problems by installing any unrequired/conflicting drivers/non-drivers, or by installing them in the wrong order. The other unkown is the effect of the replacement motherboard that was installed in the laptop (when I sent it to a Toshiba ASP for repair a couple years ago), which is the motherboard for the equivalent European mode, the Satellite 5100-603.


Anyway I'm in the process of analysing the info on the missing drivers/non-driver software, to see what info there is that can help decide what to install, and in what order (eg. Released Date, Posted Date, downoload info, support bulletins). Will probably also look at 5100-603 drivers & non-drivers on the Toshiba UK website, to determine whether there are any differences. However, it would make life a lot easier if anyone with the answers could advise.


Its a pity that Toshiba USA does not provide this info on the download webpage. Of course the 5105-S702 is an obsolete model, so there is no chance of that happening now.
