Laptop freezes when LCD monitor is plugged in... PLZ help

I have an ASUS M51Sn-X2

I recently bought a 22" LCD monitor (Chimei)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824252008

For one day, it worked perfectly fine. I tried both the D-Sub and DVI-D connectors and found that there was a bit of a flicker with the D-Sub, and the DVI-D was overall clearer and brighter. So the next day, my boyfriend brought me my laptop while I was in class. He said he simply unplugged it and packed it up. When I came back to my dorm, I tried replugging it in, and every time I plugged it in, my laptop would completely freeze without recognizing my monitor. Whether I booted it with the monitor plugged in or plugged it in after it was booted up, my laptop would just freeze up immediately. I can't go to my video card settings or display settings because it freezes immediately after I plug it in. I tried already having those open, and then plugging it in, but again, my laptop will freeze immediately.

Any idea? Is it my DVI port on my laptop? Or is there some way I can reset all of my display settings to its default?

there may be a problem with resolution. Since the resolution of your external is greater than the maximum resolution of your notebook, that may be what's triggering the freeze. Is there a way to set up dual monitors in your graphics card settings before actually plugging in the second one? Alternatively, can you use the function key combo for switching monitor output when the external is plugged in or is that frozen too?
