1 GB Geforce 9800M GTX vs. Dual SLI 512MB Geforce 9800M GT

I'm going to purchase a Sager NP9262 at Xoticpc, and can't dedice whether to purchase dual Geforce 9800M GT of 512 MB each or a single GTX version of 1GB.

On the good side, the GTX is cheaper (125 bucks cheaper), but I wonder if it's more powerful than the combined forces of the lesser GT ones...

I don't mind the price, I just want to get the best one... The question is, what's better?

I can't find enough info about the mobile GTX online, someone knows? Please help me.

I don't think anyone has tested the M9800GTX but it seems the M9800GT performs pretty close to the existing M8800GTX.

I would imagine that for the most part a pair of 9800GTs would outperform a single 9800GTX except in cases where SLI scaling is poor. You can determine which games do better with SLI than others by looking at reviews for desktop cards that specifically compare SLI performance to single card performance.

The I will go for the dual SLI ones. Most games should run fine on it, specially Crysis. Thanx

Did you get the dual 9800's then? I had the same dillema, but I was told by a friend with dual 8700M GTs that he would never go that route again in a notebook, because there just wasn't much improvement over single cards. I want to go with the single 9800GTX because it offers 1GB of ram and that is what I want. And when you can get a decently spec'd one from the place you're going for around $2700 or so, that's not a bad deal! What did you end up getting? And please post a review for us.

Thanks

Xotic PC offers 9800 GTX in SLi now, I think.

The 9800M GTX has already been tested on a Sager NP9262. It scores around 10900 3dmarks (3dmark06) using a q9650. Two 9800M GTs in SLi scores a bit less than 15k in 3dmark06 using the same processor on the Sager.

That doesn't seem right for the GTX (not that I'm doubting you) but my single 9800GT is getting around 10200 in 06 and that's with a dual core processor. 3DMark 06 tends to favor cores over GHz although graphics performance is primary with CPU performance having only a slight impact in the final score. I would have thought the GTX would have about a 15 to 20% performance advantage over the GT based on the specs but that was just a guess.

Anandtech just posted a review of the 9262 although still with dual 8800GTX cards but they pointed out an interesting problem that is unique to SLI equipped notebooks. Driver support is terrible from pretty much all notebook vendors including Sager and although you can download hacked inf files it's much harder to find working drivers for SLI notebooks.

Although battery life should not be a priority if you're purchasing such a machine I still find occasions where I prefer to run off the battery for periods of time so there's another advantage of a single card. Purchase cost is still the primary drawback to SLI IMO.

Not sure if you have to be a member to view attachments, but here's a guy who has the Sager in question:

...........

Keep in mind though that he ran the test on Vista 64 and with stock drivers. He could probably get more points under XP and with better drivers.

Yes I ran mine in XP 32 with updated drivers. That would make some difference.

I don't see any attachments in your post BTW.
