1. 4gb is the max. Although not a night and day difference, I do think that going to 4gb, dual channel, and with you running Vista 64bit, it will be a worthwhile upgrade. Stunning? No, but worthwhile. After all, you only need to purchase 1 2gb stick of DDR2 5300 to replace the 1gb stick with. Do not angst about having a "matched pair" it should run in dual channel mode just fine.
2. You can, but it won't perform any better because it is set to utilize the DDR2 667mhz, and I believe that you will find that the bios in this notebook does not allow for changing the ram timings.
Unfortunately, the real "boost" in ram performance under Vista 64 comes when you jump to 8gb, which not many notebooks out there yet can take.
