I have an inspiron 1420... and i have a bunch of problems with the preloaded OS

and wanted to load my own OS on it...

but when i booted my windows CD and went through all the initiation, It told me that the computer didnt find any harddrives or hard disks... and asked me to quit

i know the drive is there.. i am able to boot into the windows vista that was loaded on there....

what do i do?

since it boots the other windows installation, then it isn't a hardware problem. sometimes you have to load the drivers for the hard drive again, but they make that option pretty clear during the installation.

Go into BIOS and under SATA Operation select the option other than AHCI, sometimes says compatibility mode or something. You won't need to load an F6 driver or slipstream one in that case. Mind you though, when you change from AHCI your existing OS won't boot since it was installed with AHCI enabled.

All AHCI does is gives you access to some Hard drive features that in all reality only benefit you on a SERVER and not on a single spindle laptop.
