Anyone using Windows XP Pro 64 Bit Version

Thread Starter
I recieved a copy of the 64 Bit XP OS with my M6300, and it seems Dell offers all the drivers for this laptop. (but 32 Bit is loaded right now)

Any one else using this 64 Bit OS - how do you find it ?

Worth the upgrade effort or not ?

Thanks

yes and no - needing lots of work to dig up relevant drivers, and many apps still only running 32bits mode. Now, if u run Linux, then it is a different ball game all together. I personally find the win64bits is yet to be desired, for what i need.

cheers ..

Performance gains with 64 bit are limited as well.

I had xp pro x64 OEM. Now I run Vista Ultimate sp1 x64 OEM.
Problem with xp pro x64 is it isnt really supported anymore (If it really ever was)- even Microsoft no longer supports it. (i.e., Onecare)
As for where to get it- This is where I bought mine:

When I had Vista 64bit installed on my old MX6453 upgrading from Vista 32bit, I lost performance, my WEI score in Vista 32bit was a 3.5, but w/ Vista 64bit it wouldn't go any higher than a 2.0, also Vista 64bit was a lot slower than 32bit

x64 has better security, and performance is faster. my WEI score:

Processor: 5.4
Memory: 4.7
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming graphics: 5.6
Primary hard disk: 5.9

I will never go back to x86 O/S. I have full x64 driver support with Vista, and no issues. That being said, I do not recommend XP x64.

Well I have tried both XP and Vista x64 OS

Vista crashed with the Raid Drivers and I found it sluggish.

I got Xp x64 running right now and the only program I can't ge working was the canon camera drivers for transferring photos.

I may still try Vista again, buyt really IMo Vista is a major dissapointment, and a POS.

I hope the next release is a better product

not sure how much of the updates I had at the point it crashed.

I was still trying to tune things to imprive performance when it went south.

I had disabled ACP and it kept telling me about it over and over again asking to enable it. how do you stop that notifcation ? as one example.

It was definitley sluggish and for some reason windows kept pausing for several seconds. - did not know why and again after the pacth installed which included updated Intel Raid Drivers it crashed totally.

So I formatted and installed XP again.

But i may still try again, (Dual Boot) on my other HD

click the security centre icon on bottom right (edit) to stop it bugging you

It could have been system restore taking snapshots when your changing stuff - I have it all turned off and use acronis. I have indexing also off on my laptop but not desktop

I'm actually running aero off, as windows classic which is a bit "irish" for vistax64 but I dont use aero, and the minimize/maximise buttons on windows mask some program features of Esignal software which i use.

Kind of like a retro version of vista but it works. I have to dual boot XP on my laptop (32bit) for work and I think I've mentioned before I find it slightly faster, but I do miss the vista wee conveniences - but its a bugger to get used to at first I'll admit that

If anyone knows of a free XP style skin for vista please chime in, as classic is a wee bit too dated. I found plenty of XP to Vista but none the other way around. Hate these bloody min/max buttons. If theres a way to fix that please let me know too

cheers
