School laptop

I'm new here so take it easy on me.

I am going to be starting my first year of college next month and i need a laptop for gaming...err i mean school ""wink wink"".
Anyway ive done a little shopping around and i have narrowed it down to either a Gateway P-173X FX Edition, or a Toshiba Qosmio X305.
From what i can tell they are quite similar.

So this brings me to my question. Which is the better of the two performance wise. I am a huge gamer and in between school (and even during) I want a laptop that can deliver the highest performance for today's high end games.

If you feel that both of the two I have narrowed it down to aren't the best please feel free to suggest something, just please keep it close to my budget of $1500

You can look at the performance of the Gateway P-171X FX Edition here and I don't think the Toshiba's are shipping yet. They were newly announced a few weeks ago.

I'm not sure about that one. I was at my local best buy 3 days ago and they had one sitting on the shelf i played with it a bit, asside from the waaay to loud of a metallic finish, it was a very nice machine and the speakers with subwoofer made for some great sound (untill the employee asked me to turn it donw), but still I couldn't pick a winner between the two.

The gateway has a 8800m GTS and the toshiba has a 9700m GTS whats the difference there? I dont know much about laptop cards.
Also the gateway has a intel core 2 duo t7500 running at 2.2 ghz, and the toshiba falls short with a t7350 running at only 2.0 but toshiba seems to make up for it with faster ram pc3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM.

UGH! I dont know I hate having to make up my mind, can someone make it up for me?

hmmmmmm, I see. Well it may not be you making your mind up for me but I certainly appreciate your opinion.
Back to the video cards....which is faster

9700 GTS and 8800GTS are being put into the same class of performance, with 9700 has a "slight" lead in 3DMark06 run

cheers ...

I'll give the advice i always give in situations like this: get a plain jane laptop for schoolwork and use the extra 2 grand you save over a gaming laptop to build a desktop with enough power to really game...non of that pansy laptop hardware

I'm a college student as well, and believe me, you won't/shouldn't have any free time to game. If you do, you're not working hard enough. I easily spend 2 hours studying for ever 1 hour I'm in class and I'm in class 4-5 hours a day and sleep for 9.5 hours and eat for 1 hour.

I've already thought that option over and to be honest I never seem to be home the way it is I seem to be out of town ALOT. I've gone over my school/work schedules and I agree with you I wont have alot of time to game, but by buying myself a gaming laptop i can still squeeze in those precious little moments of gaming every so often wich is much better than the alternative wich is no gaming at all.

So in short my logical reasoning for geting a gaming laptop is because I barley have time for my desktop, and since a laptop is portable it will make it possible for me to hook up to the nearest wifi and jump in some cod4 in between work travel and school.

Now can we please focus the replies back to wich is the superior machine.

No problem, just pointing out the "cheapo" argument. I personally am against 17" screens because they weigh too much and gateway just seems like a sketchy brand.

But I would go for the toshiba system even though ddr3 memory is currently not a proven/"useful" technology. It's seems like a ball-point vs rollerball pen argument between the two.

Input much appreciated. Thank you :-)

**UPDATE**
Just checked out the gateway website they have there FX series on sale i can now get there high end model for close to the price of the 173x
The 173 XL edition has a 2.4 GHZ intel core 2 duo T8300 and has 2x200G 7200 rpm HDs oh and also a 17.0" WUXGA Ultrabright TFT Active Matrix (1920 x 1200 max. resolution) vs the 1440x900 res one on just the plain 173x for 1700 after coupon is it worth it? and if so then wouldnt the gateway greatly outclass the the toshiba? especially since the gateway would have a hi def display

i bought a gaming machine in my first year of university. it has seen me through now to the end of university. the downside is that if you think you will game by the time you are done school you wont...

i get maybe an hour or two a month to game these days. even over the summer when i am not at school.
