Did I Receive a "New" M1530

alright so i've been enjoying my m1530 until i had an issue with the hard drive. i was working in a program when it suddenly restarts. it automatically runs a bios test and i get the error 2000-0141 stating a hard drive was not detected. upon a few restarts, the laptop eventually boots and it's been working fine since.

however, after putting a few facts together, i feel i didn't get a new/fresh laptop. here are some facts
  • hard drive issues
  • missing install discs and storage case
  • comptuer didn't arrive with plastic protection on aluminum casing
  • fine scratches are present on the black bezel that houses the media controls
  • missing other small items like the earpieces and cloth

i'm generally not picky, but i did pay a good amount for this computer and feel a bit cheated. is this an unusual case or am i just being anal?

Hard drives die, fact of life. I've had a couple fail on me within the first week as well and they were purchased from retailers.

Unless you request them, it won't come with the discs. Only the high end gamer XPS systems get the little storage case and discs AFAIK.

it wasn't supposed to

There is a thin layer of plastic film on this piece...at least there is on the replacement ones that I get odds are the scratches are in the film not the panel itself.

I do not recall these items being included either. However, it's not unusual for someone in shipping to neglect accessories like that.

You did receive a new system, outlet systems don't even ship from the same warehouse that new systems do. It's not entirely unheard of though for there to be some cosmetic damage sustained in packing or during shipping from time to time. Missing accessories are pretty common for any product with lots of bits and pieces.

i agree. but could the system have been returned from an unsatisfied customer who reported problems? or would dell first attempt to fix the problem on the customer end?

i thought the m1530 was a fairly high end xps system. as for requesting all of the install discs when you order, that's a first for me. i'll have to keep that in mind.

are you sure. to clarify, i mean the aluminum protection on the keyboard where the palms would rest. i've seen many "unpacking" videos and i see people remove a plastic film.

i don't see one on my system. can anyone confirm if there should be one?

well even if there weren't packaged, i'll be making a call to dell since i'm entitled to those items.

there's no "shipping" damage. just fine scratches on the black bezel that would occur from cleaning without a microfiber cloth. then again...if there should have been a plastic film when shipped, those scratches shouldn't exist.

again...i'm generally not anal about things. but after putting two together, it seems that i got something that i didn't pay for.

you got a new system, some components just have infant mortatlity sometimes. read about the bathtub curve for some more insight

it does sound like you were missing the other box tho, if youre missing the other accessories. the machine and sleeve should have been in one box, the case, screen wipe, headphones, and discs all came in another box (the two boxes were together in a larger box when I got mine).

the 1530 doesn't come with a plastic protective film on it

i did receive (2) boxes in (1) big box but only received some items. should there have been a 3rd accessory box that someone made a post about?

as for the plastic protection, this is what i'm talking about. i've seen a good number of vids where people pull it off.

boister, I can once again reassure you you did receive a new system. When someone returns a system it goes to a different place than where the new systems come from. New systems come fresh off the plane from Malaysia.

As for the missing film, this isn't uncommon either for some systems to have it and others to not have it. My D820 didn't come with any film on its outside when I received it new except for a little piece on the IR port.

all xps models should come with driver disks, cloth, earphones, remote and all the other junks.

try updating the bios from A11 to A12. Some customers reported problems with A11.

try using your laptop for work not looking at porn, viruses from dirty websites can cause computer to restart.

well i contacted tech support via chat about my hard drive problem. he agreed that it's a faulty drive and was going to send a replacement. i then brought up the issue of missing items and such. the tech guy told me to contact customer service; which i did. i spoke with a couple people about my situation and they agreed with me without much discussion. to my surprise, a new laptop is being sent.

dell's service is getting better.

i will have to agree on that. while i've always thought dell was offered good support, maybe since i've only owned their xps line, they impressed me this time.

anyhow, i used my computer for the first time without the power supply. after connecting the power supply to charge the battery, i noticed it says "plugged in, not charging". since a new laptop is already on its way, it's not of a concern to me. however, i'd like to know what would cause this problem. i've read that it could be an issue with a bad motherboard.

yeah the motherbord would have to be replaced in that case, sounds like the circuit that detects the AC power is shorted

hmmm...well this further questions if i did in fact get a used/returned laptop.

either way, as mentioned, dell has already agreed to send a new laptop. after i get the new laptop, i'll be sure to test this issue.

well you're being taken care of, but no, you did not get a used machine
