New firmware for fans in 8790

Thread Starter
-This firmware has been installed and being shipped with systems since the 15th of this month (April).

-This firmware as of 4-21-04 1.00.F2 is the same version though named different from the beta ones released.

-The way this firmware works is you hit the "Fn" and "F10" keys to hear the beeps which puts the fans in one of two modes. One beep means full auto mode, two beeps means wide open. I personally run wide open at all ties, the notebook stays very cool to the touch, but I don't mind the noise and consider it low compared to many of the dekstop systems I and others around me have used.

*disclaimer* You should always contact Sager to verify our version listed is the latest.

This is ONLY for the 8790 systems. All you have to do is download the attachment at the bottom of this post which is a .zip file titled 879H8.zip

To be able to update, you need an external USB floppy drive.

1) Plug the USB floppy drive into your USB port with Windows running and booted up. If the systems does not recognize the floppy drive, you may need to install the drivers that came with that drive.

2) Insert a floppy disk that is NOT write protected, open up "My Computer" and right click on your A: drive and select "Format", when the options pop up, select "Create MS Startup Disk". This will format the disk and load the needed boot files. Once that is done, unzip the file you downloaded (879H8.zip) and put the files on the A: drive with the files already there from creating the startup disk.

3) Reboot to the floppy disk where you will get an A prompt and just type "dir" to get the list of files on that disk. You will see the file you put on ending in .bat (879H8F2.bat). Just type that file name and it will auto run the update. When it's finished you will need to reboot.

If your system doesn't boot to the floppy drive, you will need to jump into the bios and change the order of bootable devices.

So you are saying that this is the exact same firmware that you sent out and I have been testing for the last week or so. Just making sure. I guess I can update with this one anyways when I get a chance.

Thanks.

yes you can, and you can run the update from you hdd. Thats how i did it. I do have a question for Adam and the fokes at sager. Why cant they have it so the fan runs at a constant speed that keeps the laptop at a certain temp rather than it kicking from low to high and back again. That would make a little more sense. Just my 2 cents.

i updated to the new bios..it's a worthy update. Fan noise was a big problem in my classes. Everyone would turn around when the fans turned on..yes it was that bad. i have the fans on low setting with the new bios and it doesnt bother me or anyone else around me. I made a bootable cd with directions from http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/. Follow the directions for "clean bootable cd" and add the files that adam gave us. It's was really easy..anyone can do it. Follow the directions carefully though..updating the bios is a very serious process.

OH MY GOD!!! Just flashed the bios from my external floppy and now the computer won't turn on. I tried unplugging and that didn't work. I tried removing the battery and that didn't work. I even tried removing the motherboard battery for 30 seconds and that didn't work. Please help for the love of god! Goes to show...if it aint' broke, don't fix it.

Just me or is this firmware extremely bugged. First time booting up I fn+f10 and it went to wide open mode, but wouldn't respond to go back to normal mode. After reboot went to normal then worked good, but didn't beep at all. After playing a game for a while and back to windows the fans wouldn't turn off. So I turn off the lap and the fans were still running, pulled the power cord and they shut off.

Also I thought this update stopped the loud start rev noise when fans auto turn on at 50 degrees.

Edit: whats weird is when it acts up, you just need to unplug and plug the power and it resets back to normal..

Do you have any "blinking lights" during the time that the fans "won't turn off"?

If anyone needs, I have a .iso of the cd bootdisk you need to do this. It works perfectly. Just burn the .iso onto a cd and your all set. I can turn it into a .nrg or anything you need as well. Or perhaps Adam would like to host it.

I believe they were blinking.. Thought that was for low battery warning, it was plugged in at the time.
