Cant decide

Thread Starter
I'm buying a notebook for college. I decided on getting a macbook pro. Now its just deciding between the 2.4 GHz and the 2.5 GHz. Not for the processor, but the graphics chip, 256mb and 512mb. I'm buying this for college but i want it to last a while and i would like fairly good performance, im going into computer programming which may not be too graphics heavy. but i'd like to play a few games on it too...

Any opinions? is it worth the $500 for the graphics chip?

If you're going to game get 512.

it seems many feel the current card nvidia 8600gt in the macbook pro is too weak to take the benefits of 512MB over 256MB. there have been some tests and they show a slight improvement under special circumstances.

I think the actually bigger difference, on paper and in practice, is the 6MB L2 cache vs 3MB on the core2duo which is still rather insignificant to most users.

Seems like a pretty steep price to pay for the difference. If budget is not an issue - sure, go for it.

I have the 2.4 GHz / 8600gt with 256MB MacBook Pro - I don't game a lot on it, but it handles games like F.E.A.R., Guild Wars, WoW, and others just fine.
