Works on battery but not with adaptor

I have an Acer 9303 wsmi which has started behaving strangely. It works normally just on battery but when I plug in the adaptor, the screen is blank (apart from a few scratchy lines). The screen went blank earlier today when on via adaptor. I think I had too many applications open. It hasn't worked properly since. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Take the battery out and see if you can work with the ac.

Thank you for the suggestion. Just tried it though and it didn't work. Everything works normally on just the battery but as soon as I plug in the adaptor, the screen breaks up or goes blank.

. Does the ac still charge the battery, when the laptop is off?
. does the laptop turn on and run, with the ac "already" plugged in before the startup? (you responded to this, I just wanted to confirm again)

cheers ...

It still charges the battery and i can hear the hard disc working with the ac plugged it and in battery mode. Now there is no display in either mode - just a blank screen. I take it that I won't be able to replace the video card if that's the problem?

GPUs (vid chips) are not replaceable. You would have to do a complete system board replace

2nd this, but before anything else, how about hooking an external monitor to your laptop and see how it behaves

Hi. Thank you for your advice. However, I tried that yesterday. Nothing happened. Just a blank screen.
Then later on, the display came back on while on battery for a while then went blank after about 20 minutes. Screen still breaks up with ac in.

well, many users suggested "reflow-ing" - search the forum on the word and see if you can hit up on some tips. I am at the end of suggestions, other than time for a new comp

You are incorrect. Any type of chip on the motherboard can be replaced with the correct equipment/material and knowledge on how to do so.

I have done this before and that is how I know.

Like you said, with the correct equipment/material and knowledge. That does not include the majority of people who come here. Besides, the cost of labour/shipping to and from the customer would probably be close to the cost of a replacement mainboard

to ship a board both ways does not cost more then $10-20.

New board is going to run you 150-350 depending on the make and model.
