e1705 backlight failure?

Turned on my laptop the other day to find the screen had gone seemingly dead. After a bit of toying, I found that the image was being properly displayed, but that the backlight simply wasn't on. I called up Dell and they sent e a replacement monitor - same problem. Ran preboot diagnostics, and the error returned was "error accessing the LCD inverter". This happened on BOTH monitors, old and new, and with different cables in each. As a result, I don't think it's the inverter at all, but of course Dell's sent me a THIRD monitor.

Anyone have other ideas?

EDIT: Using the laptop right now via an external monitor. Works just fine.

You are still using the same inverter that originally came with the laptop? Or the replacement lcds came with new inverters?

cheers ...

Nevermind, problem's solved. Turns out there was a bit of SOMETHING (dunno what) shorting two pins at the base of the LCD cable socket on the video card. Screen works just fine now.

To clarify, though, I received a new screen assembly, which came with an inverter attached, and the same issue occurred.

I wouldn't rule out the 2nd monitor being defective. Dell's parts department has had a nasty rash of sending out DOA parts this past week. I had two calls where the parts were DOA (Used to have 2 in a calendar year). Let them try the third display.

No no, you don't understand - there was something shorting two pins on the socket where the screens plugged in, not on the screen's plug. The material was outside the socket, creating the short where it was soldered to the video card. Not only do I not feel the second screen works fine, but a THIRD would just give me more spare parts to return.

Oh - actually, I'm USING that second screen right now. I figured I may as well use it instead of my older one, even if both work. :P
