Is the system recognizing that you have the right wattage power supply? Go back into BIOS and at the top of the battery info page it should tell you what wattage AC Adapter is connected. I can't remember if 8600's needed the 90W or not.

Hey Mr Evil

Think you have found the problem. Bios cannot recognize adapter and system runs faster on battery. Is a new adapter needed or could there be some other problem. Adapter is 65W original dell and continues to charge battery

Thank you for your expertise

Beg, borrow, or steal another power supply and see if that fixes the issue, if it does then buy another brick. If that doesn't fix your issue it might be the DC Jack that needs to be repaired. There's some online places that'll fix it for you for $150 including shipping both ways.

More often though, AC Adapter type not detected issues are fixed by replacing the power supply.
