Dell 8600 Old School

hey i have a older laptop dell 8600 laptop , anyway , when i start up my laptop , i have a nice clear screen, about 30 seconds of it running the screen goes black... if i look at the screen up close ,i can see a slight image of the desktop , and windows still runing and working fine... if i close and reopen the laptop , the screen comes back on , and then again shuts off after 5 second of it opening....

any ideas??

dead inverter or ccfl most likely. although, if it for sure comes on for 5 seconds each time you do it, then the ccfl is probably fine and it's the inverter or a transistor in it that's dead.
